General Motors Plans to Offer a Broad Payout

Fund could offer payments to anyone injured or killed in crash in which air bags didn't deploy

A fund set up by General Motors Co. to compensate victims of crashes linked to defective ignition switches could offer payments for anyone injured or killed in a crash in which the car's air bags didn't deploy, people familiar with the situation said. Compensation expert Kenneth Feinberg, who will administer the fund, is expected to outline details of the victims' fund as early as next week. Families of people killed or injured in one of the 2.6 million recalled cars could opt out of accepting payments from the fund if they want to sue the auto maker.

Ford Introduces New Edge SUV for More Than 100 Markets

Ford Motor Co. unveiled a redesigned version of its Edge mid-sized SUV to be sold in more than 100 markets worldwide, capitalizing on a growing global advantage in sport-utility vehicles. Built on the same mechanical foundation as Ford's popular Fusion sedan, the 2015 Edge has a new look and improved technology to increase fuel economy, safety and keep drivers connected, the Dearborn, Michigan, automaker said [Tuesday]. The Edge goes on sale early next year at a price yet to be announced. Slotted between the small Escape SUV and the three-row Explorer, the Edge is part of Ford's global onslaught in which SUV sales rose 38 percent worldwide last year to 1.2 million.

Toyota to Sell Fuel Cell Vehicle in U.S., Europe from 2015

Toyota Motor Corp.'s highly-anticipated hydrogen fuel cell vehicle will debut in the Japan market by next April priced around 7 million yen ($69,348) and go on sale in the United States and Europe by the summer of 2015, the carmaker said. Toyota unveiled the production version's exterior design in Tokyo, showing an electric blue vehicle with only subtly toned-down styling from the dramatically curved concept with gaping front air intakes exhibited at the Tokyo auto show last fall. Toyota said the car, dubbed the FCV, will first go on sale in U.S. markets where the hydrogen refueling infrastructure is developed.

BMW Will Decide on Location of 2nd N.A. Factory Before Summer Break, CEO Says

BMW Group is still deliberating on where to locate a second factory in North America but will reach a decision before the summer break, CEO Norbert Reithofer said [Tuesday]. BMW is considering locations in countries that are signatories to the North American Free Trade Agreement, an area that includes the United States, Canada and Mexico. The carmaker said in March it will ramp up annual production capacity at its existing North American plant in Spartanburg, South Carolina, in the United States as it moves to cut dependence on fragile European markets. BMW has been narrowing the list of locations, with at least two sites in Mexico still being considered, sources said in April.

Driverless Cars Gain Traction in Congress

Trips in prototype from Carnegie Mellon U. fuel bipartisan talk of future technology

Congress was bullish on driverless cars Tuesday, as more than a dozen members got a ride Tuesday in an autonomous vehicle engineered by Carnegie Mellon University. The Obama administration and members of both political parties think driverless cars will eventually make their way to American garages. The technology holds tremendous promise to reduce the 32,000 annual road deaths, 2 million injuries and nearly 6 million crashes. Rep. Bill Shuster, R-Pa., who heads the House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee, brought the Carnegie Mellon project to Washington on Tuesday. He doesn't think driverless cars will be on roads in “mass quantities” for 15-20 years. But when they are, he believes they will decrease road congestion, increase productivity and reduce traffic deaths. He wants Congress to look at whether future highways need to be configured differently.

The Tiny Three-Wheel Car that Could Be the Next Big Thing

It's not quite a full-blown automobile – at least not as we know it – and not quite a motorcycle, but it's cheap and gets unbeatable fuel economy. A sleekly designed three-wheeled two-passenger vehicle from startup manufacturer Elio Motors in Troy, Mich. is planned for introduction sometime during 2015 that promises up to 84 mpg on the highway and a sticker price starting at just $6,800. Being developed as an economical low-cost commuter car – ideally the second or third model in a family's fleet – the as-yet unnamed “autocycle” will include amenities like three airbags, power windows and door locks, an audio system with an iPhone/iPod interface, air conditioning and a 3-year/36,000-mile warranty.

Ford Takes Wraps Off '15 Power Wheels F-150

Ford Motor Co., in partnership with Fisher-Price, today unveiled the 2015 Power Wheels F-150. The third generation of the ride-on toy -- designed for children 3 years and older and a key product of Ford's merchandising and licensing efforts -- is a child-sized version of the aluminum-bodied truck due to be launched late this year. It comes with LED headlamps, off-sidewalk capabilities -- and a maximum speed of 6 mph. Ford revealed the Power Wheels pickup at the Westin Hotel at Detroit Metro Airport with the same pomp and music it used in January to unveil the F-150 at the Detroit auto show. Fisher-Price will release the Power Wheels F-150 in September with prices starting at $349.
