NADA Convention Expands Expo to Meet Demand for Booth Space

10 hotels in San Francisco sell out after the first week of attendee registration.

The floor plan of the 2015 NADA Convention & Expo in San Francisco has been increased to accommodate a large number of requests for exhibit space. “There has been an overwhelming response from companies applying for booth space,” said Steve Pitt, NADA vice president of conventions and expositions. “So far, we’ve received more than 500 requests from companies that want to exhibit, and the expansion will allow us to accommodate most of them.”

The NADA Convention runs Thursday, Jan. 22, to Sunday, Jan. 25, at the Moscone Center. The NADA Expo, which runs Jan. 23-25, will now occupy more than 600,000 square feet of exhibit space in the lower levels of Moscone South, Moscone North and Levels 1 and 2 of Moscone West. “In addition, 10 out of 42 hotels sold out during the first week of attendee registration,” Pitt added.

The keynote speakers are former Florida Governor Jeb Bush and NADA Chairman Forrest McConnell on Friday, Jan. 23; Jay Leno and NADA Vice Chairman Bill Fox on Saturday, Jan. 24; and inspirational speaker Beck Weathers on Sunday, Jan. 25. Click here for the speaker bios.

Considered the “Automotive Industry Event of the Year,” in addition to the Expo, the NADA Convention includes dealer-manufacturer franchise meetings, hundreds of educational workshops for dealers and their managers and numerous networking events.

Online registration is now open. Dealers and their managers are encouraged to make their hotel reservations as soon as possible because rooms will fill up quickly. Early bird registration ends Sept. 12, which includes a $100 discount from the onsite rate. For more information or to register, visit www.nadaconvention.org.

GM Can't Find Nearly 140,000 Recalled Cars for Ignition Switch Defects

About 6.4 percent of the nearly 2.2 million recall notices that General Motors Co. mailed for its ignition switch recall in the U.S. this year were undeliverable, according to a regulatory filing by the Detroit automaker. The disclosure shows the difficulty in recalling older vehicles that often are on second or third owners. GM executives repeatedly have said the company wants a 100 percent response to the ignition switch recall. The automaker, in a required quarterly filing dated July 25 to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, said 139,592 recall notices for Chevrolet Cobalts, Saturn Ions and other cars with defective ignition switches could not be delivered. The report for the second quarter also said that in 18 cases, the present owner was unknown.

Hyundai to Pay $17.35M Fine for Recall Delay

Hyundai Motor Co. agreed to pay a $17.35 million civil penalty for delaying a 2013 recall, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration said Thursday. As a result of failing to report in a timely manner a safety-related defect affecting 43,500 2009-2012 Hyundai Genesis cars, the Korean automaker also agreed to comply with NHTSA oversight requirements. The defect involves corrosion in the brake system that can result in reduced braking effectiveness. While no fatalities have been reported, there are six reported collisions, and two people have been injured, NHTSA said.

BMW's Global Sales Advance 8% in July but Lead Over Audi Shrinks

BMW's global lead over German rival Audi is shrinking, despite increasing deliveries in July, as the luxury-car leader posts lower volume growth in the United States and Europe. BMW said on Friday that sales of premium cars and SUVs rose 8 percent last month from a year earlier to 139,399. Audi, Volkswagen's flagship luxury brand, announced on Thursday 144,000 deliveries in July. July was the third month this year that saw Audi outsell BMW, which has been the global luxury sales leader since overtaking Daimler's Mercedes-Benz division in 2005. Audi, which has ranked second since 2011, and Mercedes have each vowed to take the top spot by the end of the decade.

W. Europe Recovery on Track as Car Sales Rise 5% in July

Car sales in Western Europe grew by 5 percent in July to just over 1 million vehicles, bringing sales for the first seven months to 7.4 million units compared to 7.0 million in the same period last year, according to market researchers LMC Automotive. "Registrations remain on track for a solid full-year expansion for 2014, with further growth forecast in the next few years on the back of ongoing economic recovery," LMC analyst Jonathon Poskitt said in a report. Taking July's data into account, the Seasonally Adjusted Annualized Rate (SAAR), which forecasts the likely full year outturn, remains at 12.2 million units. Total Western European new car sales in 2013 were 11.5 million units.
