Senate to Hold Hearing on NHTSA Auto Safety Efforts

A Senate panel will hold a hearing next week on the future of the government's auto safety agency and how it handled General Motors Co.'s ignition switch complaints. Sen. Claire McCaskill, D-Mo., will chair a Senate Commerce subcommittee hearing Sept. 16. It is expected to include testimony from acting NHTSA administrator David Friedman, the Alliance of Automobile Manufacturers trade group and at least one auto safety advocate. Several proposals have been introduced to revamp NHTSA, give it new authority and dramatically increase staffing. The agency's budget for overseeing auto recalls has remained flat for years.

NHTSA Asking Auto Makers to Cooperate on Cybersecurity

Auto makers asked to agree on how to share information about data security threats by 2015

Federal vehicle safety regulators have asked auto makers to develop a way to share information about efforts to hack vehicle data systems using a common format, the acting head of the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration said Tuesday. While there is no recorded case of a successful cyberattack on a car, "they're trying," acting NHTSA Administrator David Friedman said. Mr. Friedman said he has asked auto makers to agree on how to share information about data security threats by 2015.

Subaru Boosts 2014 U.S. Sales Forecast to 500,000 Vehicles

Subaru of America, expecting to sustain strong U.S. growth, has boosted its forecast for sales this year to 500,000. Last year's total of 424,683 marked the Japanese brand's fifth consecutive U.S. annual sales record. In January, COO Thomas Doll projected 2014 sales would climb as high as 460,000. But after outpacing the market with a 19 percent surge through August, Subaru has now raised its forecast to 500,000. To reach that mark, Subaru will have to sustain its January-to-August monthly average of about 42,000 sales. Hitting a half million would add to a string of achievements for Subaru, the only brand in the United States to boost sales in each of the past six years.

Fiat CEO Grabs Ferrari Role Ahead of Wall Street Debut

Fiat SpA Chief Executive Officer Sergio Marchionne tightened his grip on the automaker by grabbing the top job at super-car brand Ferrari ahead of the group's Wall Street listing. Marchionne, 62, orchestrated the departure of Ferrari Chairman Luca Cordero di Montezemolo, who stepped down today, three days after the Fiat CEO criticized the unit's Formula One performance and took issue with his offer to stay in the job. Montezemolo, who ran Ferrari for 23 years, will make way for Marchionne on Oct. 13, the same day that shares of Fiat Chrysler Automobiles NV are due to start trading in New York.

Audi Plans to Take Over the Wheel in Stop-and-Go Driving

Audi AG, the world's second-largest maker of luxury vehicles, will roll out technology to enable autonomous driving in urban traffic, joining companies promoting features to ease the strain of operating a car. Audi's self-driving system takes over steering, braking and accelerating in stop-and-go traffic and operates at speeds up to 60 kilometers (37 miles) per hour, Chief Financial Officer Axel Strotbek said yesterday in a speech at the Frankfurt School of Finance. The system will be available “very soon,” he said, without providing details. The commitment from the Volkswagen AG unit comes two days after General Motors Co. announced it will introduce a Cadillac model in two years that can travel on the highway without the driver holding the steering wheel or putting a foot on the gas pedal.

Nissan Taps BMW's Krueger to Head Infiniti

Nissan Motor Corp. has poached BMW veteran Roland Krueger to head its leaderless Infiniti luxury unit, lending a touch of German flair to a brand struggling to break out of the second tier. Krueger, 48, steps into a brand twice stung by recent defections, first by brand President Johan de Nysschen's departure in July, then by the exit of its chairman, Andy Palmer, last week. Infiniti's new German boss will be based at the brand's global headquarters in Hong Kong and report to Nissan CEO Carlos Ghosn.
