The National Automobile Dealers Association’s board of directors has elected Bill Fox as chairman for 2015. Fox, who represents New York’s franchised new-car dealers on the NADA board of directors, will assume the position of chairman and CEO at the 2015 NADA Convention & Expo next January.

“It is a true honor to serve this industry and this board. This is an exciting time for the auto industry and for dealers across the country,” Fox said. “We will continue to advocate strongly for dealers, and the franchise system which is the best and most efficient model for consumers, dealers and manufacturers alike.”

He currently serves as a partner in Fox Dealerships, which sells Chevrolet, Chrysler, Dodge, Honda, Jeep, Ram, Scion, Subaru and Toyota brand vehicles in the upstate New York cities of Auburn and Phoenix.

Jeff Carlson, who represents Colorado’s dealers on NADA’s board, was elected vice chairman. He is president of Glenwood Springs Ford and Glenwood Springs Subaru in Glenwood Springs, Colo., and partial owner of Summit Ford in Silverthorne, Colo.

Neale Kuperman, who represents dealers in New York City, was elected treasurer. David Shepherd from Kansas was elected secretary. The election took place at NADA’s board meeting in Scottsdale, Ariz.

U.S. Auto Sales Expected to Rise Modestly in 2015

Auto analysts said Tuesday U.S. sales will continue to rise in the next few years, but the pace of growth will slow further in 2015. U.S. auto sales are on pace to rise 5 percent in 2014 to 16.4 million — the best performance since 2006 — after rising by nearly 8 percent in 2013. The consensus is “cautious optimism” as production and sales will grow far faster in Asia, while Europe and South America face significant economic concerns. LMC Automotive senior vice president Jeff Schuster said at a Standard & Poors auto industry conference that it predicts sales will rise just 2 percent next year to 16.7 million — fueled by 100 new, refreshed and redesigned vehicles being introduced in 2015, including Ford's new aluminum F-150. LMC sees U.S. sales rising to 17 million by 2018. LMC predicts the market will rise to 17.5 million in 2020 — which would represent the highest ever U.S. auto sales. Auto sales were above 16 million between 1999 and 2007 — hitting a high of 17.4 million in 2000.

Big 3 Battle Shapes Up to Haul in Pickup Buyers

It's game-on for Chevrolet, GMC and Ram in the race to grab bigger shares of the full-size pickup market. Analysts expect a battle from General Motors Co. and Chrysler Group LLC against rival and sales leader Ford Motor Co. over the next several months as Ford readies the all-new 2015 F-150. Ram has gained the most market share so far this year. "Without question you'll see GM and Ram will continue to play the incentive game to continue to bite into Ford's share," said Bill Rinna, LMC Automotive senior manager of North American forecasts, in an interview. That means consumers will win, too: Deals should be plentiful on pickups during the fall when truck sales typically perk up, analysts say.

Toyota Recalls Mount as Automakers Faces More Scrutiny

Toyota Motor Corp. made its fourth global recall involving more than a million vehicles this year, as the world’s largest automaker begins operating with stricter supervision over safety from U.S. regulators. The carmaker is calling back 1.75 million vehicles, including 759,000 Toyota and Lexus sedans to repair fuel pipes that could leak and raise fire risks. Toyota received the first report of a problem with cars it’s recalling from the U.S. in June 2010, spokesman Dion Corbett said. “A single initial report cannot identify a trend and rarely prompts a recall,” Corbett said by e-mail. “When we see what might be a trend and investigate the issue, and when we believe there is a safety-related defect, we begin a recall.” Automakers are under increasing pressure to hasten their recall process and justify the time lag between learning about potential flaws and calling back cars for fixes.

70 Percent of Franchised Dealers Increase Charitable Giving

Used- and new-vehicle sales are rising, and the latest survey data from the National Automobile Dealers Association and Ally Financial showed dealers continue to increase their level of giving to charitable causes. In fact, more than 70 percent of franchised dealers surveyed in September said they increased their charitable giving so far in 2014, up from 65 percent last year. Survey orchestrators noted that about 43 percent of dealers said they expect to increase their contributions again in 2015, up from 39 percent in 2013.
