First Takata Air Bag Class-Action Suit Filed

The first class-action lawsuit against air bag manufacturer Takata Corp. and several automakers has been filed in Florida. The law firms of Labaton Sucharow and Baron & Budd filed a complaint late Monday in U.S. District Court for the Southern District of Florida, representing 21 plaintiffs across 10 states. The suit alleges that Takata built defective and deadly air bags and continued to install them in new vehicles for years after they knew about the product's defect.

Obama Administration Eyes Leadership Change at NHTSA, Report Says

The acting chief of NHTSA, the top U.S. automotive safety regulator, is unlikely to be nominated for the job and an active search is under way to fill the position, a source familiar with the matter told Reuters on Monday. After a series of perceived failures at the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, David Friedman, who has served this year as acting head of the agency, is not expected to be tapped by the Obama administration for the job, the source said. The agency has been sharply criticized for responding slowly to repeated red flags of a deadly ignition flaw in millions of General Motors vehicles and its handling of recalls of millions of cars with potentially defective airbags made by Japan's Takata Corp. It is not clear whom Transportation Secretary Anthony Foxx and officials at the White House have in mind to run the agency. Foxx told The Detroit News a week ago a nominee would be announced soon.

Fiat Chrysler Replaces Longtime Quality Chief

Doug Betts, Fiat Chrysler's longtime quality chief, abruptly left the company Tuesday, one day after its brands performed poorly in Consumer Reports magazine's annual reliability rankings. Fiat Chrysler said in a statement that Betts, who has been with Chrysler for the past seven years, exited the company to pursue other interests. He was immediately replaced by Mark Chernoby, who will head quality for the global company, and Matthew Liddane, who will lead Chrysler Group quality in North America.

Why the XC90 Can't Come Soon Enough for Volvo Dealers

Some Volvo dealers are expecting the brand's image to blossom this spring with the arrival of its redesigned flagship crossover. And they can't wait to see what image emerges. The 2016 XC90 goes on sale in the U.S. in April. Volvo's U.S. dealerships will get about a third of the 80,000 XC90s built annually when production is running at full capacity. Many Volvo dealers say the brand can't get the vehicle to market soon enough.

On Twitter, 140 Characters = $716 Million in Car Sales

Analytics company measures social network's impact

It's a burning question for auto marketers on Twitter: Are our tweets influencing people to buy cars? To tackle this question, the social network released new data today that attempts to show just how much 140 characters are worth. MarketShare, a marketing analytics company that has partnerships with global brands including Twitter, measured the direct and indirect effects that Twitter had on auto sales for more than 20 volume midsize and luxury compact cars that accounted for 34 percent of annual U.S. sales in 2013. Twitter says the model also includes “broader media mix, and non-marketing factors that influence purchases such as vehicle price and the economy.” In 2013, MarketShare concluded that Twitter drove $716 million in auto sales among those 20 nameplates through Twitter Ads, positive brand mentions, amplification of TV advertising and the Twitter activity of the automakers themselves.

Are Flying Cars The Future Of Transportation?

Looks like tomorrow's skies are going to be pretty crowded. Juraj Vaculik and Stefan Klein, of Slovakian company AeroMobil unveiled at the Pioneers Festival in Vienna what they call “the most advanced flying car”. Able to drive 430 miles on a tank of petrol, it has a stylish design, with foldable wings. According to the founders, it has what it takes to become an integral part of the regular road traffic, while at the same time being able to land and take off in any airport in the world. The AeroMobil doesn't come out of the blue: as Vaculik said, the one unveiled in Vienna it's their third prototype; the first tests date back to the mid-90s.
