Takata Threatened With Fine as U.S. Seeks Air Bag Answers

Takata Corp. is being given one month to answer 36 questions from U.S. regulators that may shed light on what led to the recalls of millions of air bags that may inflate with too much force and injure a car's occupants. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration said the auto-parts maker must respond by Dec. 1, or face a $35 million fine. The agency is seeking information on quality control at a factory, the use of contaminated or improperly formulated propellant and a complete accounting of deaths and injuries, according to the order.

Lower Weight Just One Way to Boost MPG, Ram CEO Says

While Ford's F-150 aluminum truck will weigh less because of aluminum and will be likely be a more formidable competitor when it comes to fuel economy Bob Hegbloom, CEO of the Ram brand, said he's not convinced it will be a "game-changer," in the extremely competitive U.S. pickup truck market. Ford's 2015 F-150, which goes on sale in December, will be the first light-duty pickup truck to be built with an aluminum body, which will lower its weight, improve fuel economy and help the Dearborn automaker achieve tougher fuel standards in the coming years. Right now, the Ram 1500 gets the highest fuel economy of any half-ton truck when customers buy it with a diesel engine, but that edge could go away when the F-150 goes on sale.

Daimler, VW Dampen Speculation About Imminent CEO Succession

Succession is not an imminent topic at Daimler or Volkswagen, the chief executives of both carmakers said [Thursday], adding that any potential candidates would most likely come from within their respective companies. Daimler's Dieter Zetsche and VW's Martin Winterkorn were both asked during a panel discussion in Munich whether succession was imminent and whether a suitable candidate had emerged. Zetsche said it was generally unwise to speculate in public about who would become the next chief executive, because premature exposure may prove disruptive to a smooth succession process.

Mercedes, VW to Thwart Google’s Car Inroads in Car Data

Volkswagen AG and Mercedes-Benz called on fellow automakers to establish separate platforms for data on vehicle use to avoid handing over sensitive customer information to Google Inc. “We seek connection to Google's data systems but we still want to be the masters of our own cars,” Volkswagen Chief Executive Officer Martin Winterkorn, said today at an industry conference in Munich. “Potential conflict arises around making data available.” With consumers increasingly expecting seamless connectivity, automakers are making more Internet services available in their vehicles as well as outfitting cars with systems that allow them to communicate with one another. Google as well as Apple Inc. see in-car systems as an opportunity to expand, offering systems such as Apple's CarPlay and Google's Android Auto to connect with people while they're driving.

Driving the Undead: Millions Of Zombie Cars And Trucks on U.S. Roads

Just in time for Halloween, do you wonder if your car is a zombie? No, it doesn't want to eat your brain. A “zombie” car is the cute – and seasonal – moniker Experian Automotive came up with for vehicles on the road that sport the names of discontinued brands. There are a whopping 14.7 million zombie cars driving around in the U.S. today, according to Experian. If discontinued brands are “zombies,” the Great Recession was something of a Zombie Apocalypse in the auto sector. A bunch of brands got the ax in the run-up to the recession and bankruptcy restructuring for General Motors and Chrysler in 2009. The U.S. auto industry has put those days behind it, but the cars produced under the nameplates they killed a few years ago keep shuffling on.
