Oct. Sales: Detroit Up and Down; Import Brands Rise

Detroit automakers reported a patchwork October sales tally on Monday — mostly reflecting boom and bust within the brands. Cheaper fuel renewed buyers' interest in the brand's bigger vehicles. And a combination of low interest rates and loans averaging just less than six years gave fancier models still-affordable monthly payments. Import brands generally finished with stronger sales increases, though many had similar internal face-offs as some models, despite redesigns, did poorly, while others found plenty of buyers. Overall industry sales continued the year's gains, with the annualized sales pace for October at 16.46 million vehicles, vs. 15.38 million a year ago and a year-over-year percentage gain of 6.1% to 1.28 million new cars and trucks in the U.S.

Have You Voted Yet? Make Sure Your Voice is Heard on Election Day

Voting is a cornerstone of our system of government and a civic obligation. NADA wants to remind and encourage those of you who have not already done so to vote in the midterm election today. For voter information on where to find your official polling place, hours of operation, and full ballot summary based on your residential address see https://2014.votinginfoproject.org/.

The nonpartisan website Get to the Polls is a project supported by The Pew Charitable Trusts' Voting Information Project, and technology companies. It does not favor any particular candidate or party, it merely aims to make it simple for registered voters to cast their vote. Be engaged and have your voice heard on election day!

Nissan Leaf Sets Another Monthly Sales Record, Chevy Volt Remains Steady

Here we go again. Another month in the books and another month of record sales by the Nissan Leaf in the US. For October, the world's best-selling pure EV sold 2,589 units, which is 29.3 percent more than October 2013. That makes it 20 times in a row that Nissan can say that last month sales were better than the same month a year before. All told, Nissan has sold 24,411 Leafs in the US this year, a new record, reflecting an overall Leaf sales rate that is up 35 percent, year-to-date.

As for the Chevy Volt, things remained steady last month in the face of a new model that's coming in the second half of 2015. Chevy sold 1,439 Volts last month, which is about the same as September (1,394) but down 28.8 percent from the October 2013 despite GM having its best overall US October sales this year since 2007. So far, 2014 Volt year-to-date sales are down 14.9 percent through the end of October compared to 2013.

GM Ignition Claims Rise 12%; No New Claims Approved

The number of claims filed with General Motors ignition switch compensation fund rose by more than 12 percent over the last week, but no new claims were approved. Compensation fund adviser Ken Feinberg's office said 1,772 total claims had been filed by Friday, including 196 for fatalities. That's up from 1,580 total claims the previous week, including 193 death claims. But the number of approved claims remains at 30 death and 31 injury claims. GM initially said 13 deaths were linked to the ignition switch defect. Since the fund began reviewing claims, this is the first week that no new claims were approved.

GM Restores 'Blue Devil' ZR1 Corvette

General Motors Co. and Chevrolet are to reveal the restored 2009 Chevrolet Corvette ZR1 that was damaged when a giant sinkhole in February swallowed it and seven other Corvettes at the National Corvette Museum in Bowling Green, Kentucky. The 2009 ZR1, nicknamed the "Blue Devil," was on loan from GM. It fell into a 30-foot-deep sinkhole and was the least damaged of the eight cars. About 10 people worked for six weeks — mostly at an auto shop in Sterling Heights [Mich.] — to restore the Blue Devil to its original glory. Chevy will show the restored car at the Specialty Equipment Market Association Show in Las Vegas, an industry show where car bling is king.
