Takata Exec Warns About Ability to Fix Deadly Airbag Flaw

Supplier admits it may have a parts shortage

An executive from Japan's Takata Corp. told U.S. senators on Thursday the supplier is urgently trying to ramp up replacement parts for millions of vehicles fitted with potentially deadly airbags, but said it may not be able to move quickly enough. The U.S. auto safety regulator also warned of the risks of moving to a nationwide recall, as senators have urged, saying such a move could divert replacement parts from humid regions where the defective airbags are more likely to rupture upon deployment, shooting metal shards into cars. At least five fatalities have been linked to the defect so far, mostly in the United States. The hearing by the U.S. Senate Commerce Committee exposed several blind spots of regulators and the auto industry about the scope and urgency of the airbags' dangers.

NHTSA Blasts Chrysler for 3% Repair Rate on Jeep Recall

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration blasted Chrysler for its slow progress on repairs of 1.56 million Jeep SUVs that have been recalled because of potentially dangerous rear-mounted gas tanks. NHTSA Deputy Director David Friedman said the agency sent Chrysler a letter about getting parts to dealers faster and criticized the company for taking to long to complete the recall. "I am concerned about ...reports showing a woeful 3% repair rate out of more than 1.5 million affected vehicles," Friedman said in the letter to Fiat Chrysler Automobiles CEO Sergio Marchionne. While Chrysler has told the agency it has 400,000 parts available Friedman said customers are complaining about a parts shortage at their dealers. NHTSA also took the unusual step Thursday of issuing an advisory urging Jeep owners to take the recall notices seriously.
