Why US Auto Sales Have Yet To Reach Prerecession Peaks

The U.S. auto industry is in the midst of a rebound as annual sales of new cars and trucks approach prerecession levels this month. But it's taken six years for annual new-auto sales to recover from a 30-year low in the midst of the Great Recession, and stagnant wage growth for U.S. workers could keep the industry from reaching its prerecession heights. "If wages were growing, we'd be in a market over 17 million already," Steven Szakaly, chief economist for the National Automobile Dealers Association (NADA), told Automotive News. By most estimates, new-auto sales are expected to hit 16.4 million in 2014. The last time sales topped 17 million was in 2001, a year after sales hit an all-time high of 17.4 million. The NADA expects new-car sales to remain below the historic high for years to come. "I think these wage and income challenges are with us for the next several years,” Szakaly added.

Senate Panel Approves New NHTSA Chief

The Senate Commerce Committee unanimously approved the nomination of Mark Rosekind to head the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration on Tuesday evening — and he may be approved by the full Senate this week, the incoming chair of the Senate Commerce Committee said. Sen. John Thune, R-South Dakota, who has been pushing the administration for months to name a permanent chief to head the auto safety agency, told The Detroit News he thinks the Senate will act. The Commerce Committee now will send it to the Senate floor. “I think he'll get through,” Thune said.

Takata Patents Show Decades Spent Seeking Safer Air Bags

Air bag patents show researchers probed ways to make the devices more durable and the explosive propellant inside them more stable for decades before Takata Corp. products designed to save lives started killing people. The patents, some from as early as 1985, were intended to improve the ammonium nitrate propellants that help inflate the bags and strengthen their metal housing. The applications provide ammunition for lawyers seeking to show the Japanese supplier could have acted sooner to head off defects linked to at least five deaths globally after air bags have deployed with too much force, said Jason Turchin, a lawyer who represented a driver injured by a Takata air bag in a 2006 Chrysler sedan.

Honda Stops Sale of Acura Sedan in U.S. in Latest Quality Fault

Honda Motor Co. told U.S. dealers to stop selling some of its Acura TLX sedans because the parking lock may fail to engage, the latest quality shortcoming at the automaker after President Takanobu Ito took a pay cut. A 9-speed version of the 2015 TLX, the best-selling sedan from Honda's premium Acura brand, may roll away despite being in the park mode, the Tokyo-based company said in a statement on its website. The automaker said it plans to start notifying customers from Jan. 6 about the recall.

More Than 133,000 Nissan, Infiniti Models Recalled Due to Fire Risk

Nissan and its luxury division Infiniti are recalling more than 133,000 vehicles in the U.S. and an additional 336,000 globally to fix a potential fire hazard, the automaker said Tuesday. The recall affects the 2012-2014 Nissan Juke, the 2012-2013 Infiniti M56 sedan and QX56 SUV, and the 2014-2015 Q70 sedan and QX70 SUV. The five models all have direct-injection engines, and the fuel-pressure sensor in them may not have been “sufficiently tightened during production,” Nissan said. This can cause vibrations to loosen the sensor, and fuel to leak out. Nissan said it will begin notifying owners of the recall in January, and that dealers will install new fuel-pressure sensors in affected models at no charge.

White Remains Most Popular Color for New Cars in 2014

It appears new car shoppers aren't very original when it comes to picking colors. According to vehicle paint giant PPG Industries, white was the most popular color for new cars for the fourth straight year. The company's data shows that 28 percent of new cars were painted white in 2014 worldwide, up from 25 percent last year. The second most popular color was black, found on 18 percent of new cars, while silver and gray tied for third place in the popularity stakes, with each appearing on roughly 13 percent of new cars.
