Honda Hiring Supplier-Quality Auditor Amid Air-Bag Crisis

Honda Motor Co., the automaker at the center of a global auto-safety crisis, is seeking to hire a senior quality engineer who would lead audits of suppliers' quality assurance. Honda listed the job opening Nov. 7 on its U.S. unit's hiring website. The same day, U.S. senators called for the Justice Department to open a criminal investigation into Takata Corp., the carmaker's biggest supplier of air bags. The devices have been linked to five deaths in Honda models and recalls of more than 13 million of its vehicles worldwide. The auditor position is one of a series of quality- and safety-related job openings Honda has listed as President Takanobu Ito navigates the air-bag crisis and separate recalls involving crucial new models.

F&I Jobs Hold a Powerful Lure for Women

It seems women are keen to work in the finance and insurance department. In fact, F&I has the highest percentage of women employees in a dealership, after the office/administration department. Women make up 92 percent of the office/administration staff at dealerships, according to the National Automobile Dealers Association's 2014 Dealership Workforce Study Industry Report, released Dec. 3. Its 2013 data showed that of total active payroll employees, 18 percent were women. That was unchanged from 2012. But “we were seeing more women in the F&I function,” said Ted Kraybill, president of ESI Trends, the Largo, Fla., firm that compiled the study for NADA.

Why Honda is Touting its New 'Green Dealer' Guide

Honda is releasing its internal Green Dealer guide to help automakers and other franchised businesses reduce their carbon footprints. Developed in 2011 and refined over the last three years, the 93-page roadmap shows how to implement certain techniques to save the most energy. For instance, automating the thermostat and turning off the lights after business hours can save a dealership $7,000 annually and cut energy consumption by at least 10 percent, according to Honda. The program is supposed to appeal to dealerships, medium-size commercial businesses and companies that want to encourage suppliers, partners and franchisees to be green, while positioning Honda as a leader in environmental issues.

Report: Nearly Half of EVs Sold in California

The Energy Department said Wednesday that nearly half of all electric vehicles sold in the United States are purchased in California. The U.S. Energy Information Administration noted that in 2013, there were 70,000 battery electric vehicles in the United States and 104,000 plug-in hybrid electric vehicles registered in the United States — out of 226 million vehicles registered in the United States. “Total U.S. sales of plug-in electric vehicles have increased in recent years, but still represent only about 0.7 percent of new vehicle sales in 2014 so far, up from 0.6 percent in 2013 and 0.4 percent in 2012.” Some states like California give EV owners generous perks — especially single-driver access to high occupancy vehicle lanes in the traffic clogged state.

The 2015 North American Auto Show will feature at least 40 never-before-seen cars and trucks, underscoring the event's importance as a global auto show

Automakers from around the world are planning to reveal at least 40 never-before-seen cars and trucks at the North American International Auto Show in January, underscoring Detroit's position as one of the top automotive shows in the world. An additional five new vehicles will be shown for the first time in North America. “All of the automakers realize they have to bring the biggest and best reveals to this show,” said Scott LaRiche, co-chairman of the auto show. LaRiche said one of the Detroit show's biggest selling points is the volume of media it attracts from around the world, which is why the automakers send their top executives to debut some of their most important vehicles in Detroit.
