NADA Chairman: New-Car Dealers Are Catalysts for Change

In his first keynote address as chairman of the National Automobile Dealers Association, Bill Fox delivered a message to critics of the franchised dealer network. “The automotive franchise system is the best and most efficient method of bringing new vehicles to the driving public,” Fox said [Saturday] in remarks at the NADA Convention & Expo in San Francisco. “The franchise system breeds competition that benefits consumers, manufacturers and local communities alike.” Fox, a multi-franchise dealer in upstate New York, highlighted the economic impact of the nation’s new-car dealers.

ADESA Auction Raises $40,000 for Veterans' Canine Companions

NADA Foundation donates an additional $20,000

It was a winning team that raised $40,000 to train service dogs for the Wounded Veterans Initiative of the Canine Companions for Independence (CCI). The event — where ADESA auctioned a 2012 Harley-Davidson Heritage motorcycle — was held Saturday at the 98th annual National Automobile Dealers Association Convention & Expo. The winning bid of $20,000 was matched by Joe Verde, who’d won the auction in the previous two years. The auction’s proceeds will be added to a $10,000 grant from the National Automobile Dealers Charitable Foundation. That grant, made earlier in the day, also was presented to CCI’s Wounded Veterans Initiative. In addition, the NADA Foundation contributed $10,000 at an event at the national headquarters in Santa Rosa, Calif. on Thursday.

CCI trains companion dogs for, among others, wounded veterans, a cause long supported by the nation’s new-car and -truck dealers. The motorcycle was donated by ADESA, which runs used-vehicle auctions throughout North America. Greg Noonan, director of Insight Media Enterprises Inc., prevailed through spirited bidding. “ADESA is a new-time company with old-time values,” which are shared by Verde, he said. “They understand that in the end you’re measured not by what you’ve kept, but by what you’ve given away.”

Ford Dealers Want U.S. Market Share Back

Ford’s new sales chiefs aim to recapture the 1 point of U.S. market share that the brand gave up in the past year. After launching 14 North American vehicles in 2014, the brand will begin realizing the benefits of those in the year ahead, said Stephen Odell, who took over this month as Ford’s executive vice president of global marketing, sales and service. The biggest of those introductions, the redesigned F-150 pickup, is scheduled to reach full production within a few months.

Lincoln, Counting on Black Label for Conquests, to Expand Program to More States

Lincoln’s new Black Label program, which offers customized themes and an elite level of customer service, is helping the brand make conquest sales and will expand to dealerships in more states in the second half of 2015, executives with the brand said Saturday. Black Label versions of the MKC and MKZ are currently offered through 35 dealers in six states, including California, New York and Florida. Black Label, which costs about $6,000, also will be available on the MKX when that vehicle is introduced in the third quarter. “In the second half of this year, we’re going to expand it based on the learnings from the first six states, which we just got into late in the fourth quarter,” Matt VanDyke, director of global Lincoln, told Automotive News. “One of the things that will enable that is the expansion of Black Label across the lineup.”

Volvo Dealers Embrace U.S. Management Shift

Dealers applaud the recent management change at Volvo Cars of North America and said having a senior executive from the home office in Sweden at the helm assures quick responses on all issues -- including product and retail support -- and signals a real commitment to the U.S. market. “Everyone is excited -- we have a direct line to the board of directors and the CEO,” said Chip Gengras, chairman of the Volvo Retail Advisory Board. Other dealers have a similar outlook, underlining the struggle many have had trying to stay profitable with an aging and limited product lineup.

Last week, the company opened a regional parts distribution center in Redlands, Calif., to promise same-day delivery of service parts to dealers in California, Arizona, Hawaii and Nevada, where BMW’s market penetration has been growing, says Ludwig Willisch, CEO of BMW of North America. The company opened a similar same-day distribution center in 2014 in Lancaster, Texas, outside Dallas, to serve dealers in Texas, Oklahoma, Arkansas and Louisiana. “We continue to grow and expand in the United States,” Willisch said, speaking outside BMW’s make meeting [during the NADA Convention & Expo].

Mercedes to Send U.S. Dealers Greater Share of Global Output

Mercedes-Benz dealers will receive a greater share of the brand’s global production this year after experiencing tight supplies in 2014, U.S. chief Steve Cannon said Saturday. Cannon, CEO of Mercedes-Benz USA, said that a combination of increased global production and slumping European markets will send more vehicles to the U.S. Speaking after the make meeting, Cannon said that the strong dollar also makes sales here more attractive to the automaker. “So the flow of cars will increase,” he said. “We’re confident that we’ll grow at least as fast as last year and probably faster.”

George Soros' Wall Street Fund Shops for Dealership Groups

Wall Street fund Soros Fund Management wants to partner in, invest in or outright buy a large auto dealership group, said four sources familiar with the situation. Two representatives of Soros Fund Management are at the National Automobile Dealers Association convention here this weekend to research the industry and find potential purchase opportunities, sources said. Soros Fund, run by Chairman George Soros, an international financier, is “in conversations” with an undisclosed number of dealership groups and has “proposed different transactions to different people” to meet those sellers’ needs, said one source close to the situation. Those potential transactions range from an investment partnership to a full-fledged purchase of a group, said the source.
