Why New Car Sales Won't Set Records: Lots Of Little Reasons, Says Economist

Stricter fuel-economy standards will gradually reduce the environmental impact of cars, but what if people just stopped buying them? New-car sales haven't yet recovered to their pre-recession levels, and at least one analyst believes that at best, they'll only equal those heights this year. The National Automobile Dealers Association (NADA) says 16.4 million vehicles were sold last year, against 16.9 million in both 2005 and 2006, heights that were followed by several years of declines. Steve Szakaly, the group's chief economist, believes that this year's sales will only hit the same 16.9 million--against projections higher than 17 million by other analysts. Long-term trends will continue to siphon off sales, Steve told industry trade journal Automotive News. His calculations aren't due to any one major factor, but rather a combination of smaller trends that together will keep sales down, he said.

GM Dealers Using ‘Green’ Program To Attract Customers

General Motors is ramping up its environmental sustainability efforts, and its dealers are joining in the movement, as well. The automaker recently launched its “Green Dealer Recognition” program, and certain Chevrolet, Buick, GMC and Cadillac dealers are using these environmental credentials to attract customers who value “green” businesses. The participating dealers have made strides in areas such as energy reduction, renewable energy use, water conservation efforts, recycling, on-site nature habitats and community outreach.

Automakers' Push for Fuel-Efficiency Boost Aluminum

Automakers, under pressure to build more fuel-efficient cars, are driving demand for aluminum, even at a time when other commodities are slumping. While copper prices are down 14 percent this year and iron has slipped 8 percent, aluminum has gained 0.1 percent. The rise is small but significant, marking an improvement from a year in which the price of aluminum fell to its lowest level since 2009. Meanwhile, producers including Alcoa Inc. and Rio Tinto Group predict demand will continue to rise over the next few years as the metal grows in importance to carmakers.

Zetsche, Other Top Auto Chiefs to Lobby for EU-U.S. Trade Deal

Daimler CEO Dieter Zetsche, Volkswagen boss Martin Winterkorn and other captains of Germany's automotive industry will gather in Berlin Wednesday to try to rally support for a transatlantic free trade deal that faces potential collapse. Politicians on both sides of the Atlantic are pushing for an accord known as the Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership (TTIP) to eliminate all major trade and non-tariff barriers between the U.S. and European Union. Auto executives have endorsed the deal, but Germany's powerful labor leaders are skeptical.

Can Dodge Rebuild Pontiac Excitement?

General Motors CEO Mary Barra, at the recent Automotive News World Congress, said the company doesn't miss any of the brands that were discontinued during the company's 2008-09 bankruptcy and restructuring -- Saturn, Saab, Hummer and Pontiac. You can take that to mean that none will ever be revived by GM, at least while Barra is in power. But that doesn't mean displaced customers of two of the brands -- Hummer and Pontiac -- have nowhere to go. Fiat Chrysler Automobiles is building a lineup that would be a natural home for displaced Hummer and Pontiac customers.
