Electric Vehicles Lose Buzz

It's a buyer's market for drivers interested in new or used electrics and hybrids. "There's a lot going against EVs right now," said National Automobile Dealers Association senior analyst Laurence Dixon. Like outright sales prices, lease costs on new electrics continue to come down. The unprecedented leasing rates means a steady supply of used all-electric and plug-in hybrid electric vehicles will continue to feed the market in the coming years. NADA's Dixon said as more plug-ins and all-electrics enter the used car market, they will drive prices down even further, and likely exceed demand. "Used EV demand arguably is going to be weaker than what it would be for new EV demand," he said. Dixon said even if the price of a used electric vehicle is the same price as a car with a traditional combustion engine, the rate of depreciation is expected to be greater over the long run. "That's in addition to any cost concerns you have with expensive componentry that malfunctions down the road," he said.

Global Automakers Push Ahead with China Expansion

Global automakers are ploughing ahead with expansion plans in China despite reports of stalling sales amid fierce competition and slowing economic growth. Auto sales growth in China, the world's largest market, decelerated to 6.9 percent in 2014 from 13.9 percent in the previous year. Nevertheless, a total of 23.49 million vehicles were sold last year, far outpacing the United States, the world's second largest market. U.S. consumers bought 16.5 million new vehicles in 2014.

NLRB General Counsel Issues Guidance on Employee Handbooks and Election Procedures

The National Labor Relations Board's (NLRB) Office of the General Counsel has issued guidance on employee handbook rules involving issues such as confidentiality, anti-harassment and media contacts. The NLRB is cautioning against workplace rules and handbook statements that reasonably could be construed to interfere with worker rights under the National Labor Relations Act (NLRA). Note: franchised dealerships  are subject to the NLRA and the NLRB even if their employees are not represented by a union. The full NLRB guidance report provides examples of handbook language that could lead to a NLRB enforcement action, suggesting that rules that encompass employee or personnel information are almost always unlawful. Such rules include prohibitions on the disclosure or sharing of employee lists, contact information, personnel file materials, handbooks and policies, or pay/benefits information. The report suggests that lawful rules are those that do not "reference information about employees or anything that would reasonably be considered a term or condition of employment." It is suggested that dealers have their employee handbooks reviewed by employment counsel with an eye toward compliance with these guidelines.

The NLRB's General Counsel also has issued a 36-page memo on the controversial "quickie election" rules that took effect on April 14, which depicts how new representation (election) cases will be processed from the point where a petition is first filed through certification of a union. The memo also covers how to file election petitions electronically and the eligibility of employees to vote. Obviously, this memo is of greatest importance to dealerships potentially facing unionization activity.

3 Reasons Why Dealers Might Be Hesitant About Tablets

Tablet users aren’t hard to spot if you’ve flown commercially recently or visited a local coffee shop. But a new survey by Auto/Mate Dealership Systems says the penetration of dealerships leveraging these devices still isn’t too high. At least not yet. Auto/Mate determined that only 20 percent of dealerships use mobile tablets in their sales and service departments. The software company found even fewer dealerships have adopted mobile tablets in the F&I department with only 7 percent indicating they use mobile tablets in the F&I process. Auto/Mate Dealership Systems president and chief executive officer Mike Esposito explained this informal survey was conducted from November of last year to April of this year as more than 100 store employees responded to questions about mobile usage in the dealership
