Bad Day: Elizabeth Warren

The Washington Post's fact-checker Glenn Kessler offered a blistering critique against Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-Mass.) [on Tuesday.] Kessler said that Warren "misleadingly" cites inaccurate information in making her case of expanding the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB). Kessler dubs Warren assertion a "false claim." It gets worse for Warren: Kessler gave Warren four out of four Pinocchios for her citing a false statistic. According to WaPo's fact-checker methodology rating system, three Pinocchios means "significant factual error and/or obvious contradictions." Warren got one worse than that. Her four Pinocchios means the argument is "whoppers," according to the rubric. Kessler also reports that a "Warren spokeswoman declined to provide an on-the-record response." House Panel Won’t Approve NHTSA Defect Budget Boost

National Highway Traffic Safety Administration chief Mark Rosekind on Tuesday sounded the alarm after a House panel approved a spending bill that doesn’t boost the agency’s budget to investigate auto safety defects. Last week, a Republican-led House appropriations subcommittee approved a spending bill that doesn’t adopt the Obama administration’s request to triple NHTSA’s defect budget and double staffing. It essentially held the agency’s budget at the current level. The House Appropriations Committee is expected to take up the 2016 $55.3 billion Transportation, Housing and Urban Development spending bill next week.

Senate Tables Vote on Obama Veto of NLRB Bill

The Senate Tuesday tabled a vote on whether to override President Obama's veto of a joint resolution of Congress aimed at stopping expedited union elections. The Senate voted 96-3 to put the measure aside in order to return quickly to the debate on a bill that would give Congress some say over a nuclear deal with Iran. A Republican leadership aide said Democrats were going to stall the vote, which would have kept the Senate from tackling the Iran bill this week. The vote to table the measure is a victory for President Obama, unions and the Democrat-dominated National Labor Relations Board, which implemented the rule in December. Republicans have denounced the NLRB rule, saying it allows labor union elections to take place in as few as 11 days, down from a current median of 38 days. The new rule is an example of union favoritism that is damaging to jobs and the economy, they said.

BMW Q1 Profit Rises 21% on Stronger U.S., Europe Demand

BMW reported a 21 percent jump in first-quarter profit on stronger demand in the U.S. and Europe for models such as the X5 SUV. Earnings before interest and taxes increased to 2.52 billion euros ($2.83 billion) from 2.09 billion euros a year earlier, BMW said today in a statement. Revenue jumped 15 percent to 20.9 billion euros. BMW said its automotive EBIT margin was 9.5 percent in the quarter, remaining at a similar level to the year-earlier quarter and at the upper end of its target range of between 8 percent and 10 percent, thanks to record sales of high-margin SUVs in the quarter. By contrast, the quarterly return on sales from ongoing business at Daimler's Mercedes-Benz Cars jumped to 9.2 percent from 7 percent a year ago, while Audi's operating margin slipped to 9.7 percent from 10.1 percent.

Subaru Wants Its Auto Dealers to Get Personal

Tom Doll’s main interest is moving the metal, but that’s not all there is to running an auto company these days. “We have to learn to be a sales, marketing and technology company,” says the president and chief operating officer of Subaru of America. “You need to know how to handle customer data. I never imagined I’d be running a technology company.” Information technology helps business, but it only aids the cause so much, he says at a recent automotive conference put on by the National Automobile Dealers Association and J.D. Power. “We have to know when enough is enough.” Subaru wants its 620 U.S. dealers to use data but not in lieu of true customer engagement.

Mazda, Customers Contribute $1M to St. Jude

Mazda North American Operations announced [Tuesday] that it has made a $1 million donation to the St. Jude Children’s Hospital to aid the latter’s efforts in researching and treating childhood cancers and other life-threatening diseases. The donation was made through the Mazda Drive for Good program, which ran from Nov. 21 to Jan. 2, aiming to donate $150 for every new Mazda vehicle purchased or leased during the time period to one of four national or 44 local charities chosen by the customer. Mazda has also pledged an hour of charitable service for every test drive of a new Mazda vehicle that was taken during the event, which ended up totaling over 66,000. The company’s employees, dealers and business partners plan to work together to contribute the service hours pledged.
