Car-Safety Crisis Grows as Toyota, Nissan Expand Recalls

The safety crisis plaguing the global automotive industry deepened as Japan’s three biggest carmakers said they would recall more than 11 million additional vehicles because of faulty air bags that can shoot shrapnel at motorists. Honda Motor Co. is expanding its recalls by 4.89 million vehicles, bringing the total called back by the company to about 19.6 million, it said Thursday in Tokyo. Toyota Motor Corp. said Wednesday it will recall about 5 million more cars after finding air-bag inflators in Japan that could be susceptible to abnormal deployment in a crash, and Nissan Motor Co. said it will call back 1.56 million. The latest round increases the total tally to more than 28 million vehicles that 10 automakers have recalled since 2008 for faulty air bags made by Takata Corp.

Many FCA US Plants Will Skip Summer Shutdown

FCA US will skip the traditional summer shutdown at four assembly plants, its engine plants and several other plants so it can keep up with demand for new cars and trucks.

FCA US said Wednesday that four of its assembly plants along with all engine and some transmission plants will continue to run throughout the summer, skipping the traditional summer shutdown so the automaker can continue to make as many cars and trucks as possible. The decision to continue operating the plants reflects the steadily increasing pace of U.S. industry sales. The U.S. auto industry is on track to sell nearly 17 million new cars and trucks this year, a total not seen since before the Great Recession. Also, FCA US, the automaker previously known as Chrysler, has managed to sell more cars and trucks each month for 61 consecutive months on a year-over-year basis.

U.S. to Speed Up Rule to Require 'Talking' Cars

Transportation Secretary Anthony Foxx on Wednesday will announce the government is speeding up efforts to get government rules in place requiring wireless vehicle-to-vehicle communication in future cars and trucks. Such regulations eventually could prevent thousands of crashes. The push comes as the Federal Communications Commission considers narrowing part of the wireless spectrum now reserved for cars to "talk" to each other; that space would expand wireless connectivity for electronic gadgets. Congress also is considering a bill that would require automakers to share the spectrum with electronic devices.

Automakers Double Down on Engines That Shut Off at Stops

The number of new cars and trucks equipped with systems that shut off their engines at stops will more than double worldwide within a decade, a report finds. From about 22% worldwide today, so-called stop-start systems are expected to show up on 55% of cars by 2024, Navigant Research says. The U.S. rate is expected to be 46% by then, up significantly but trailing 82% in Europe and nearly 69% in Asia Pacific. Though some drivers find it disconcerting to hear their engines stop and restart every time they bring their cars to a stop, stop-start systems are proven to save gas. And with automakers under escalating government gas-mileage mandates, it's a relatively inexpensive addition. Also newer systems operate more smoothly than earlier versions.

Auto Marketers Focus on Diversity, Sports

What’s on the minds of some of the top marketing gurus in the automotive industry? Sports and diversity. That’s according to a quartet of executives who took to the stage Tuesday afternoon [in Los Angeles] at the Westin Bonaventure hotel as part of Automotive News’ annual L.A. Marketing Seminar. More than 900 attendees packed a ballroom to hear how Nissan, Toyota, Honda and Hyundai are using marketing to lure new buyers. With U.S. demographics rapidly becoming more diverse, it’s essential for any brand to cast a wide -- and multicultural -- net.
