FCA Faces Scrutiny in 20 Recalls

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration is summoning Fiat Chrysler to Washington, D.C., July 2 to explain, in an unprecedented public hearing, its handling of 20 recall campaigns covering more than 10 million vehicles since 2013. The highly unusual action comes after NHTSA has raised sweeping concerns about Fiat Chrysler’s conduct in auto safety issues. NHTSA Administrator Mark Rosekind said Monday the agency has “significant concerns” about the automaker’s performance. “Our concerns are broader than one recall,” Rosekind said. “We need to determine if there is a pattern here that presents a significant safety hazard.”

Think Like Your Customers: What They Use to Shop

Driving down the road. Watching television commercials. Reading the newspaper. Checking the mail. Surfing the Web. Consumers are inundated by advertisements and marketing campaigns from every imaginable angle by a seemingly innumerable and constantly growing number of companies. While it may seem simpler to take a “carpet bombing” or blanket approach for your advertisement efforts, you can save yourself a lot of money and your customers a lot of grief if you target your advertisements for when they are not only more likely to read them, but also when they need them. So let’s focus on the medium most invested in by franchised dealerships in 2014: the Internet. According to the NADA Data 2014 report issued by the National Automobile Dealers Association, the total dealership advertising expenditure for the more than 16,000 franchised dealers in the United States bordered on roughly $8 billion last year. Franchised dealers invested, on average, 26.3 percent of their total advertising funds into the online market, more than any other area of advertisement.

Aston Martin CEO Says Alabama 'Obvious Choice' For U.S. Plant

Aston Martin is set to make a decision on building a second factory, likely to be in the United States, by the end of the year, CEO Andy Palmer said. The U.S state of Alabama is the “obvious choice” for a new plant to build the upcoming DBX crossover, Palmer told Automotive New Europe. A decision has not been made yet, he said. Palmer said the UK sports car maker has narrowed potential locations to regions where it will sell the most DBX models. “Our principal customers will be in the United States and China,” he said.

AT&T Readies Exclusive Content for Connected Cars

AT&T Inc. is gearing up to bring connected car users exclusive content such as videos and games that can be streamed onto personal mobile devices later this year, AT&T's senior vice president of emerging devices Chris Penrose said. "It's no different than being able to hook onto a Wi-Fi hotspot anywhere and get access to content you already subscribe to and get unique content that you could only get in the back of the vehicle," Penrose said. AT&T has signed up eight automaker partners, including General Motors, Audi AG and Ford Motor Co., to hook up cars with Internet access. The goal is to offer free or paid content exclusively for connected car users and sell more data, Penrose said in a recent interview. AT&T is talking to auto industry partners and content companies to bring new content like "special" shows or gaming levels on phones and tablets in connected cars, Penrose said.

Nissan CEO: On Track with Self-Driving Cars By 2020

Nissan CEO Carlos Ghosn has reiterated his prediction that his company will be ready with a self-driving car by 2020, but at the same time he is raising questions about whether government regulators will do their part. Ghosn, speaking in Yokohama, Japan, said Nissan will have have vehicles equipped with autonomous driving technology, holding to the forecast he has made previously. Other automakers are now racing to join him in reaching the 2020 goal. They all are trying to catch up to Google, which has been testing its own fleet of self-driving cars.
