CarMax Dodges a Bullet, Thanks to NADA, NIADA and NAAA

CarMax Inc. owes the National Automobile Dealers Association, the National Auto Auction Association and the National Independent Automobile Dealers Association an enormous thank you. Those associations last week helped CarMax dodge what could have been a devastating bullet. Oh, that wasn’t their objective. The associations’ goal was to scuttle the so-called Blumenthal Amendment. The amendment, proposed by Sen. Richard Blumenthal, D-Conn., would have prohibited the sale or lease of used cars subject to a recall until the defect or noncompliance has been remedied. It had been tacked onto a Senate bill to fund American transportation programs, including spending on highways, railways, transit systems and other infrastructure. Robust lobbying by those three associations and their members played a part in getting the Senate Committee on Commerce, Science and Transportation to vote down the amendment. When the bill won approval by the full Senate, the Blumenthal Amendment was already dead.

NADA Chairman Hosts New York Congressman

NADA Chairman Bill Fox (left) meets with U.S. Rep. John Katko during a recent visit at Fox Toyota in Auburn, N.Y.

U.S. Rep. John Katko (R-N.Y.) visited Fox Toyota in Auburn, N.Y., last week. The visit was hosted by 2015 NADA Chairman Bill Fox. The purpose of the visit was to highlight investments made at the dealership, provide Congressman Katko with an opportunity to meet with dealership staff and discuss several key legislative issues impacting franchised dealers in Congress.

Rep. Katko is currently in his first term in Congress from the 24th district of New York which includes the city of Syracuse and surrounding areas. Fox Toyota is part of the Fox Dealerships, Inc., family which includes nine franchises in the upstate New York cities of Auburn and Phoenix.

Automakers Trying to Stop Hackers From Taking Over Cars

When researchers at two West Coast universities took control of a General Motors car through cellular and Bluetooth connections in 2010, they startled the auto industry by exposing a glaring security gap. Five years later, two friendly hackers sitting on a living room couch used a laptop computer to commandeer a Jeep from afar over the Internet, demonstrating an even scarier vulnerability. Fiat Chrysler, the maker of Jeeps, is now conducting the first recall to patch a cybersecurity problem, covering 1.4 million Jeeps. Experts and lawmakers are warning the auto industry and regulators to move faster to plug holes created by the dozens of new computers and the growing number of Internet connections in today’s automobiles.

Crossover Sales Still Cruising Ahead

The big sales story of 2015? Well, it hasn't changed much. It's the big changeover to crossovers. Last month, compact crossovers (think Honda CR-V, Toyota RAV4, Nissan Rogue, Ford Escape) eclipsed compact cars (Honda Civic, Chevrolet Cruze, Toyota Corolla, Hyundai Elantra, etc.). Even more revealing, the fledgling subcompact crossover class (Subaru XV Crosstrek, Buick Encore, Chevrolet Trax, Jeep Renegade, Honda HR-V and the like) came within shouting distance of subcompact cars (Kia Soul, Nissan Versa, Ford Fiesta, Chevrolet Sonic and such).

How 4 Millenials Equal 1 Baby Boomer in Auto Space

With finance companies evidently thirsty for any reliable data and analysis about millennials that’s available, Experian and the National Automobile Dealers Association both chimed in on the topic of consumers born after 1980. [Last week], NADA chief economist Steven Szakaly offered a cautious assessment of how millennials are going to impact the market, especially since he projected new-vehicle sales could reach an all-time high of 17.46 million units in 2016. Szakaly explained that in part millennials “could present challenges to long-term growth in auto retailing.” The factor prompted him to note that after the industry potentially posts a record new-vehicle sales mark next year, the retailing of new models might soften back to 16.65 million units in 2017.

Novelis: Automakers Test Stronger Aluminum

Aluminum giant Novelis says it has developed a new grade of weight-saving aluminum sheet designed to replace steel in bumpers, doors and other safety-critical areas of vehicle bodies. Novelis says its Advanz 7000 series is two to three times stronger than the aluminum sheet currently in high-volume production. The company, whose largest automotive customers are Jaguar Land Rover and Ford Motor Co., says it has provided samples of its new aluminum for testing to automakers and could begin production when the new metal is ordered. JLR and Ford, the industry's two largest buyers of aluminum, likely would be among the first to use Advanz 7000.

The Golden Age of the American Muscle Car is Now

The Golden Age of Detroit Muscle is now. As classic performance cars from the 1960s and '70s fill Woodward Avenue for Dream Cruise week, one fact is undeniable: The Detroit Three's performance cars are better today than ever before. Despite strict emissions limits, concerns about climate change and unpredictable gasoline prices that would make a '60s hot rodder pull over and weep, the D3's modern performance cars could run rings around the classics. And they're surprisingly affordable when compared with price tags of some exotic cars with similarly high-performing engines.
