U.S. Investigates VW for Ruptured Takata Air Bag

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration said Monday it is investigating the rupture of a Takata air bag in a 2015 Volkswagen Tiguan in Missouri in June. Defective Takata air bags are linked to least eight deaths worldwide and more than 100 injuries. The German automaker — which surpassed Toyota Motor Corp. as the world’s largest automaker in the first six months of 2015 — told The Detroit News earlier this year that it was not part of the Takata air bag recall of up to 33.8 million vehicles by 11 automakers. The incident raises several questions, including how many VW vehicles worldwide may be impacted. The rupture of a side curtain air bag came soon after the vehicle was built and is not similar to other incidents that involved prolonged exposure to high humidity areas.

48% of Credit Unions Surveyed Say Auto is Top Growth Segment

TransUnion’s data shows credit union auto loan origination volume grew at a rate more than double the pace of the entire industry. Findings from a survey of 90 credit union executives TransUnion released this week also highlighted these institutions’ appetite for auto paper certainly isn’t waning; it's perhaps even becoming greater. TransUnion’s survey revealed that auto loans rank at the top of the list for credit union executives in terms of loan growth, focus and opportunity during the next 12 months. Auto loans were ranked No. 1 by 48 percent of credit union executives and in the top 3 (of 12 credit categories) by 81 percent of respondents.

“Auto loans have proven to be one of the key growth opportunities for credit union executives in the past and should continue to do so in the future,” said Nidhi Verma, director of research and consulting in TransUnion’s financial services business unit. “Auto loans are especially appealing because of the high demand for both new and used vehicles, as well as continued low delinquency rates,” Verma continued.

GM May Export China-Made Buick to U.S.

Analysts believe the Buick Envision will be sold in the U.S. by late 2016.

General Motors is close to becoming the first major automaker to sell a China-made vehicle in the U.S. in a move that could fuel political consternation over the decline of the American manufacturing sector. Industry analysts expect that the automaker will import the compact crossover Buick Envision from a plant in China to U.S. dealerships by the end of 2016. In fact, IHS Automotive analysts are so sure it will happen, they've already integrated it into their official U.S. sales forecasts. "That’s what we expect," IHS analyst Stephanie Brinley said. "It will be interesting to see, if GM follows through on this plan, how consumers will react."

3D Printing Will Change Auto Industry, From Manufacturers to Dealers

Consulting firm Carlisle & Co. predicts car dealerships may someday use their own 3D printers to make auto parts onsite. That raises a variety of issues. One of them: Who would need parts suppliers? Carlisle is a consultant to vehicle manufacturer aftersales divisions. Clients include Ford, General Motors, Caterpillar and Daimler trucks. There are various types of 3D printers that essentially are computer-controlled industrial robots. They lay down successive layers of a material to create finished products that range from small and simple to large and complex. Crounse, a mechanical engineering graduate from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, discusses the technology and its effect on the auto industry, including manufacturers and dealers. Apple's Car Project is Picking Up Speed: Top-Secret Tests Allegedly in the Works in California

Back in February, the auto industry was abuzz with rumors about a new, top-secret division at Apple called "Project Titan" that was allegedly building an electric car. Pundits and observers debated the truth of those rumors and whether Apple was really building a car or just some souped-up version of its CarPlay infotainment system. Though Apple has yet to address any of the rumors publicly, it's become increasingly apparent that the company is up to something very, very big on the automotive front. We've learned about Apple's secret research lab, and battery manufacturers have sued the tech giant for poaching their engineers. Then last month, Apple hired a big gun in the world of auto production. The Apple Car — or whatever it's going to be called — is shaping up to be today's worst-kept secret.
