NADA Convention Posts 12% Attendee Increase during First Week of Registration

Online registration for the 2016 NADA Convention & Expo in Las Vegas is off to a fast start. Nearly 2,200 dealers and their managers registered to attend the convention during the first five days of registration, up 12 percent compared to the same time a year ago. And as one of the most popular destinations in the country for meetings and conventions, four hotels in NADA’s convention block have already sold out. They are Encore at Wynn, Marriott Convention Center, Renaissance Hotel and Wynn Las Vegas.

Sixteen hotels are still available in NADA’s block. Other top hotels include the Cosmopolitan of Las Vegas, Aria Resort & Casino and Vdara Hotel & Spa. Aria and Vdara are located in CityCenter, which is considered a city within a city spread out over 67 acres on the Las Vegas strip and includes hundreds of restaurants and shops, spas, shows, nightclubs and other unique attractions.

The NADA convention—which runs from Thursday, March 31, through Sunday, April 3, 2016—will be held at the Las Vegas Convention Center.

Considered the “Automotive Industry Event of the Year,” the NADA convention includes dealer-manufacturer franchise meetings, new educational workshops for dealers and managers, hundreds of exhibitors on the expo floor showcasing the latest equipment, services and technologies for dealerships and numerous networking events for attendees.

Dealers and their managers who register by Nov. 27, 2015, will receive the early-bird rate—a $100 discount from the onsite registration rate. For more information or to register, visit www.nadaconvention.org/register

VW's Emissions Retrofit May be Among Costliest Recalls Ever

Volkswagen Group's worldwide repair of 11 million diesel vehicles to bring their emissions systems into compliance with pollution regulations is shaping up to be one of the most complex and costly fixes in automotive history. VW will need to install parts for vehicles already on the road that were not designed to accommodate the equipment. The work may may need to be done in special shops set up for the purpose. And it will have to pass muster with dozens of countries with their own regulations. "I can’t think of any other recall that would be as comprehensive," said Jake Fisher, director of automotive testing at Consumer Reports magazine. "It's really an expensive rework."

U.S. Demand Gives General Motors a Boost

Record operating profit in core North American business offsets recall-related costs

General Motors Co. posted record third-quarter operating profit in its core North American unit Wednesday, helping it offset $1.5 billion in costs it shouldered to resolve an ignition-switch crisis that emerged more than 20 months ago. The results, fueled by decade-high U.S. demand for profitable trucks and SUVs, help Chief Executive Mary Barra at least temporarily put to rest concerns about the auto maker’s deep exposure to a fragile Chinese auto market. It also added heft to her claim that the domestic auto giant has the cash and muscle to take on Silicon Valley companies such as Tesla Motors Inc., Alphabet Inc. —formerly known as Google—and Apple Inc., which are looking to outcompete Detroit with autonomous electric cars in coming years.

Fiat Chrysler-UAW Contract Appears Headed for Victory

Deal will be used as a template for General Motors Co. or Ford Motor Co. pact if it passes

Approval of a four-year labor contract with Fiat Chrysler Automobiles NV appeared headed for victory Wednesday night after United Auto Workers members at the auto maker’s larger plants voted in favor of the deal. Results, posted on union websites, showed the deal passing by a wide margin by both salaried and hourly workers. Workers at the auto maker’s plants in Warren, Mich., Dundee, Mich. and Belvidere, Ill. all ratified the agreement. At Belvidere alone, 83% of the production workers voted in favor of the accord. The results are considered preliminary and aren’t yet confirmed by UAW leadership in Detroit. About 40,000 Fiat Chrysler workers are covered by contract.
