Opinion: Volkswagen Faces Make or Break Start to 2016
By Nancy Hulgrave

Volkswagen's (VW) supervisory board has taken bold steps in the final weeks of 2015 to put the diesel cheating scandal to rest. But with two days to go before Christmas, I expect Santa has made his list, is checking it twice and sending a sleigh full of coal to Volkswagen's Wolfsburg headquarters. That's because VW, despite winning over regulators in Europe, has failed to get the green light to fix nearly half a million cars in the United States with so-called defeat devices that are designed to cheat on nitrogen oxide emissions tests. If VW wants to go from "naughty to nice" in 2016, it must move with a laser-like focus to correct its original sin in the U.S.

Hyundai, Kia Buying Captive Finance Stake from GE Capital

Hyundai Motor and Kia Motors are bulking up their stakes in the automakers’ captive finance company by buying shares held by GE Capital. The two will buy a 23.3 percent stake in auto financing affiliate Hyundai Capital from GE Capital, a unit of General Electric, for 703 billion won ($600.8 million), the automakers said Tuesday. The transaction does not involve Hyundai Capital America, of Irvine, Calif., - which is owned by -- and supports the financing needs of -- Hyundai Motor America, Kia Motors America and their dealers.

Ford Issues Four Recalls for About 317K Vehicles

Ford Motor Co. on Tuesday issues three safety recalls and one safety compliance recall for roughly 317,000 vehicles. The biggest recall covers 313,000 2003-05 model year Crown Victoria and Mercury Grand Marquis vehicles over an issue with a lighting control module. Ford said the solder joints on the module could crack and interrupt power to the headlamps, which increases the risk of a crash at night. In all recall cases, dealers will replace the affected parts for free.

Toyota Plans to Use Your Commute to Map Routes for its Driverless Cars

Toyota is turning to its customers to help with its driverless car effort. The automaker will draw information from customers' camera-equipped vehicles to gather road images and vehicle positional information, according to a press release. Toyota will take that information and process it through its entirely new software system. All of the data will then be sent to Toyota data centers, where it will be used to create high-precision maps.

Second Vehicle Possibilities for St. Nick

Imagine what good ol’ Saint Nick has to go through each year. We’re talking about a guy who runs a major distribution operation at the North Pole. This privately held enterprise spends a full year procuring goods, listening to customers and fulfilling their requests in one short night. You think you have it rough? Try parallel parking eight reindeer and a sleigh. So one has to wonder: What would such a highly placed, but lovable, international executive drive? No one knows, but click here for some possibilities.

"Each day that passes without an approved fix means additional pain for U.S. dealers who are struggling with stop-sale orders and inventory shortages."
