Snowstorms Expected to Chill January Auto Sales

Winter storms across much of the Central and Eastern United States as well as year-end deals that pulled consumers into dealerships in December are expected to have put a small dent in January auto sales. As automakers report their first month of U.S. sales for 2016 on Tuesday, analysts expect the industry to be down slightly compared to a year ago to about 1.1 million cars and trucks sold. The estimated decline ranges from less than 1 percent to more than 3 percent compared to January 2015, depending on analyst. “The snowstorm on the East Coast disrupted an estimated 15,000 sales,” said John Humphrey, senior vice president of the global automotive practice at J.D. Power. “Despite the storm, we’re still seeing a strong month. It’s also important to note that sales weren’t necessarily lost during the storm. We expect to see ... the majority of them recovered in February.”

Fiat Chrysler Posts 70th Straight Month of Sales Gain

Fiat Chrysler Automobiles posted its 70th straight month of U.S. sales gains in January, outpacing the overall industry and analyst expectations. The automaker recorded a 7% increase in January, compared to a year earlier, to 145,007 units, despite rough weather in the Northeast that undermined the broader industry. The Jeep brand maintained its spot as the automaker's hottest and most important brand, posting a 15% increase to 59,032 units. Dodge enjoyed a 19% increase, and Ram posted a 5% uptick.

Lexus Reports Record Global Sales in 2015; Aims Higher in 2016

Lexus may not have reclaimed the U.S. luxury sales title in 2015, but by any other measure, it was a champion year for the Japanese premium brand. Lexus racked across-the-board records in virtually every market -- resulting in an all-time high global volume of 652,000 vehicles, up 12 percent from its previous high in 2014. Toyota Motor Corp.’s luxury division also scored record sales in the United States, North America, China, Europe, Japan, the Middle East and in Oceania-East Asia. And Lexus expects another global record in 2016, with sales forecast to climb 4.3 percent to 680,000, Toyota Motor Corp. said [Tuesday] while announcing sales tallies.

VW Faces U.S. Deadline for SUV Emission Repair Plan

Volkswagen faces a Feb. 2 deadline to submit a repair plan for 80,000 diesel SUVs and larger cars that emit excess pollution, even as it considers buying back some vehicles and a prior fix plan for smaller vehicles was rejected. The world's second largest automaker still hasn't announced any timetable for winning approval from U.S. and California regulators to address excess emissions in 575,000 2.0- and 3.0-liter U.S. vehicles. In September, VW first acknowledged installing software that allowed diesel vehicles to emit up to 40 times legally allowable pollution. Last week, VW won approval to start fixing 8.5 million vehicles in Europe. VW says excess diesel emissions impact up to 11 million vehicles worldwide.

Takata Panel to Release Review of Manufacturing Practices

Takata Corp., the airbag maker responsible for the biggest auto safety recall in history, is poised to learn the results of a probe into its manufacturing practices by an outside panel set up one year ago. The U.S. transportation secretary during the George Bush administration and two former heads of the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration are among members of the panel releasing its report on Takata’s policies and procedures. The auto-parts maker last month reported an 11th death involving its airbag inflators, which have prompted recalls of more than 20 million vehicles in the U.S. alone.
