VW Faces March Deadline to Disclose Diesel Emissions Fix

A federal judge turned up the heat on Volkswagen AG on Thursday, setting a March deadline for the German automaker to disclose whether it has found an emissions fix for 600,000 diesel vehicles that is acceptable to U.S. regulators. U.S. District Judge Charles Breyer in San Francisco said he wants a definitive answer on the status of a fix by March 24. Noting that VW admitted in September that its vehicles on U.S. roads were using software to emit up to 40 times legally allowable pollution, Breyer said time was running out. "Six months is long enough" to determine if this is a fixable problem, Breyer said. "This is an ongoing problem."

Volvo's Unlikely Comeback Is Gathering Speed, Thanks To A Visionary Chinese Owner

For Li Shufu, the eccentric founder of China’s Geely Motors, the strategy was simple: “A tiger belongs to the wild world and not confined to a zoo,” he said. “We need to liberate this tiger.” It was early 2010 and Geely was about to acquire Volvo from Ford Motor Company for $1.8 billion. (Ford had paid $6.5 billion for the company in 1999). There were serious doubts about the deal. How could a little known Chinese car company with a reputation for making low-priced cars of dubious quality — with curious names like King Kong and Beauty Leopard — possibly save a premium European brand, an icon, like Volvo? Sweden’s leading automaker, for its part, was at a bottom. Sales in 2009 had dropped under 350,000. Today, just six years later, the Swedish tiger is running free and strong. Volvo sold 503,000 vehicles in 2015, the highest mark in the company’s 89-year history.

Audi Targets New SUVs Big and Small

Audi is revving up its effort to topple BMW as the world’s top luxury-car brand with new sport utility vehicles ranging from the tiny Q2 to the full-size Q8. After falling to third place behind Mercedes-Benz last year, Volkswagen AG’s biggest profit earner is seeking to reignite flagging growth and overcome the emissions scandal that tarnished the parent company’s image. Audi, which struggled last year because it had the oldest lineup among the three competitors, aims to regain an edge in 2016 by introducing new cars as BMW’s offerings age. “The competition with our rivals will remain a neck-and-neck race,” Audi sales chief Dietmar Voggenreiter said in an interview at the company’s headquarters in Ingolstadt, Germany. “We should get tailwind from our new models.”

Ford Invests $145M, Creates 150 Jobs in Cleveland

Ford Motor Co. said Friday it’s investing $145 million and creating 150 jobs at its Cleveland Engine Plant for the next generation of its 3.5-liter EcoBoost engine. The Dearborn automaker uses the current 3.5-liter engine in its F-150, Explorer, Expedition, Transit, Flex and Taurus. The second-generation engine will at least power the F-150 and the 2017 Raptor; Ford declined to confirm if it will be used again for the vehicles outside the F-150 family. The automaker promised the United Auto Workers it would invest $150 million at the Cleveland plant over the course of its four-year pact with the union.

Big Trucks Dominate List of Long-Lasting Vehicles

This may be another reason trucks and SUVs are so popular: They last a long time. That’s according to iSeeCars.com, a used-car online marketplace and automotive research firm. In its latest longevity study, it analyzed a sample of 12 million vehicles on the road in 2015 from model years dating back to ’81 to determine which ones had the highest percentage of logging more than 200,000 miles (320,000 km). Pickup trucks and SUVs dominated the list. Only one car was in the top 10. Click here for the full list.
