VW's U.S. Dealers Seek Reparations for Emissions Scandal

Idea proposed in meeting with senior executives, could be major topic at NADA

Volkswagen’s U.S. dealers are seeking reparations from the automaker for financial damages caused by the company's emissions violations. Three of VW’s U.S. dealers proposed the reparations during a meeting with senior VW AG executives in Germany last week about the company’s U.S. strategy. Alan Brown, chairman of VW’s U.S. dealer council, attended the meeting and told Automotive News that it was too early to discuss the size of any settlement so soon after pitching the proposal.

Toyota to Make Automatic Braking Standard by End of 17

Days after joining 19 other automakers in pledging to make automatic emergency braking standard on all models by 2022, Toyota Motor Co. on Monday said the safety feature will be standard on nearly every Toyota and Lexus vehicle by the end of 2017. The Japanese automaker said its “Lexus Safety System+” and “Toyota Safety Sense” packages, which include automatic braking as well as lane departure warnings and automatic high beams, will be included on 25 of the brands’ combined 30 vehicles. The Lexus GX, Toyota Mirai, 4Runner, 86 (formerly Scion FR-S) and Scion iA will not be included. Government agencies and automakers last week pledged to add the feature by 2022 as a way to reduce crashes and save lives.

Former Trailblazer BMW Now Playing Catch-Up to Mercedes

In the never-dull, never-ending clash of luxury titans BMW and Mercedes-Benz, the storyline for years has been simple: While hidebound Mercedes stumbled about, a cool, clever BMW surged out in front. Only now, not so much. After several years in which Mercedes struggled to find an answer to BMW's dominance, especially the latter's swift expansion into the booming crossover market, the story has changed. And pretty dramatically. Now, BMW is playing catch-up on several fronts, and its hotly anticipated attempt to shift the conversation last week by staging a "strategy day" in Munich fell as flat as Pfannkuchen.

NADA has learned that some exhibitors at the 2016 NADA/ATD Convention and Expo in Las Vegas have received email offers to purchase the convention attendee list. These emails are not from NADA and the companies sending the emails have no connection with NADA. NADA has not shared information about this year’s attendees with any third parties. All exhibitors at next month’s convention and expo have access to the pre-show and post-show attendee mailing lists from NADA. New-Car Dealers Breathe Life into Wyandotte Schools CPR Training Program

Other than using a real person, one of the most helpful tools in teaching cardiopulmonary resuscitation is with the use of Resusci Anne. Wyandotte Public Schools [in Wyandotte, Mich.]has some of these training mannequins, but the district needed another one. “The American Red Cross establishes how many mannequins we need and how many people an instructor can train at one time,” school nurse Laura Shonk said. She heard about the National Automobile Dealers Association medical grants program on a nursing website, so she made a contact and filled out an application. It was reviewed and approved, so someone from the association contacted a local dealer. Thanks to Genthe Honda [in Southgate, Mich.], in partnership with the National Automobile Dealers Charitable Foundation, the CPR training program at the Jo Brighton Skills Center and Madison Center has been enhanced with a new training mannequin. “When early CPR and early defibrillation is given right away to a victim, this will significantly increase their chance of survival,” said Richard Genthe, president of Genthe Honda. “CPR training teaches a person how to keep oxygenated blood circulating while waiting for professional help to arrive.”
