The National Automobile Dealers Association (NADA) donated a new delivery van valued at $52,000 to Three Square Food Bank. “We are deeply grateful to be the recipients of a brand new delivery van,” said Brian Burton, president and CEO of Three Square Food Bank. “NADA's donation will truly make an impact on our mission to reach more children who struggle with hunger in Southern Nevada. Their great partnership and generosity will touch the lives of many, and we cannot thank them enough for their support of Three Square.” The donation will have a direct impact on Three Square's childhood nutrition delivery route, which includes Kids Cafe and the BackPack for Kids programs, Burton added. “This donation supports the NADA Convention and Expo's longtime host city of Las Vegas through Three Square's mission to provide wholesome nutritious food to more than 305,000 people who are at risk of hunger in Southern Nevada,” said 2015 NADA Chairman Bill Fox, a multifranchise new-car dealer in upstate New York.

FTC Sues Volkswagen Over ‘Clean Diesel’ Ads

The Federal Trade Commission is suing Volkswagen over its advertising for diesel cars that were rigged to circumvent federal air quality standards. The lawsuit, filed in a U.S. District Court in San Francisco, alleges Volkswagen misled U.S. drivers for years about the fuel efficiency of its vehicles that were marketed as “clean diesel” cars. The suit charges that from late 2008 to late 2015, Volkswagen advertised and sold more than 550,000 diesel vehicles in the U.S. that had pollution-control “defeat devices.”

U.S. Guidance on Self-Driving Cars Due Within Months

U.S. regulators are making progress and will begin issuing guidelines to help the introduction of self- driving car technology within the next few months, Transportation Secretary Anthony Foxx said. The rapidly developing technology promoted by companies such as Google, Tesla Motors Inc. and General Motors promises to reduce traffic fatalities but won’t eliminate every car crash, Foxx said at a Bloomberg Government breakfast in Washington. Foxx said he sees a bright future for self-driving cars, even if it’s unrealistic to expect too much from the technology too quickly. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s guidance will include how self-driving cars should be tested and what benchmarks they’ll need to reach before being permitted on U.S. highways.

Auto Lenders Work to Lift Borrowers Out of Subprime

Employees and programs act as guides

Many dealership F&I managers advise customers on credit decisions that would suit them best over the duration of their vehicle ownership. But auto lenders, especially those whose portfolios include subprime borrowers, are providing guidance, too. Subprime borrowers, typically those with credit scores of 600 and below, often have bruised credit as a result of a low-income job or a significant life event such as divorce. Some auto lenders have the goal of helping those borrowers re-establish their credit. Among them are Prestige Financial Services in Salt Lake City; Exeter Finance Corp. in Irving, Texas; and Ally Financial Inc. in Detroit.

Dealership Autobody Shops Exempted From OSHA's New Crystalline Silica Rule

The Occupational Health and Safety Administration (OSHA) has exempted dealership autobody shops from its newly released rule governing respirable crystalline silica, a hazardous mineral often found in construction materials but sometimes also in body filler. The exemption shields dealerships from costly new mandates for workplace exposure control measures, exposure recordkeeping and employee medical examinations. Working with data collected by KPA Inc., the Maine OSHA Small Business Consultation Program and others, NADA successfully demonstrated to OSHA that the likelihood of exposure to respirable crystalline silica in dealership autobody operations is de minimis. Note: autobody shops were the only industry group specifically exempted from the new silica rule. Autobody shops performing tasks consistent with normal workplace health and safety controls may rely on the exemption, which is based on a recognition by OSHA that exposures will not exceed the new regulatory levels under foreseeable conditions. For more information on OSHA's new final rule on respirable crystalline silica, please contact NADA Regulatory Affairs at regulatoryaffairs@nada.org
