Financial industry says rule would likely trigger higher costs for consumers

Consumers are set to gain new powers to sue banks under a proposal unveiled by regulators, a move that lenders warned would hurt rather than help most borrowers. The plan, which would allow class-action lawsuits, sets up the latest clash between the banking industry and the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau over whether the agency is coming down too hard on lenders and overly restricting their operations.

Automakers, States Urge White House to Reject Plan to Open Spectrum

More than 50 automakers, state transportation agencies and other groups urged the White House and other federal policymakers not to open a portion of the wireless spectrum reserved for connected vehicles in the near future. The letter was signed by major auto trade groups representing nearly the entire auto industry, including Toyota Motor Corp., Ford Motor Co., General Motors, Volkswagen AG and Honda Motor Co.

Big 3 Increase Tie-Ups in Race to Self-Driving Cars

Detroit automakers are accelerating development of autonomous vehicles by increasingly partnering with the very Silicon Valley tech companies that are disrupting their industry. Lyft Inc. and General Motors Co. are developing self-driving Chevrolet Bolt EVs that could pick up passengers for testing in California within a couple of years, The Detroit News confirmed Thursday. Ford Motor Co. earlier in the day announced a major investment in Palo Alto-based software company Pivotal to develop cloud-based software for alternative mobility services. And Fiat Chrysler Automobiles NV and Google on Tuesday said they’re developing autonomous minivans and will begin testing this year.

Ford Cleans Up Its Diesels in Europe

Ford Motor has joined Volkswagen Group and PSA/Peugeot-Citroen in switching to a technology said to be more effective in cleaning harmful emissions from diesel engines. Ford said its new 2.0-liter EcoBlue diesel will use selective catalytic reduction (SCR) technology to reduce NOx emissions.

NADA Accepting 2017 Convention Workshop Proposals

The deadline to submit a workshop proposal is May 16, 2016.

The workshops are one of the main attractions at the annual NADA Convention and Expo. Nearly 16,200 participants, which included new-car dealers, dealership managers and industry professionals, attended the workshop sessions at the past convention in Las Vegas. Workshop proposals for the 2017 NADA convention, which will be held in New Orleans, can be submitted online until 5 p.m. EDT on May 16, 2016.
