Peter Fong to Lead NADA Dealership Operations

Peter L. Fong has joined the National Automobile Dealers Association (NADA) as senior vice president of Dealership Operations, NADA announced Tuesday.

Fong brings more than 20 years of industry experience to NADA, having held numerous executive-level sales, marketing and brand management positions at Ford Motor Company and Chrysler Group LLC. Fong also guided Carmoza, an auto transport start-up company, through its merger and acquisition.

Immediately prior to joining NADA, Fong was executive vice president and chief marketing officer at The Judge Group, a leading global firm specializing in technology consulting, staffing solutions and corporate training. He joined the company in 2013.

"I'm absolutely thrilled to be returning to the automotive industry, particularly now given the ongoing digital transformation of both the automotive manufacturing and retail sectors," said Fong. "My primary goal will be driving value-added changes in all areas of Dealership Operations, so that the next generation of products and services provided by NADA to dealers and their employees is second-to-none."

Fong said one key area of interest in his new role at NADA will be implementing new best-in-class educational and training programs for dealerships to accelerate the 'online to in-store' car buying experience for consumers. "Digital technology and services will play a key role in the successful adoption of this process industrywide," he said.

"Peter brings tremendous understanding and a wealth of hands-on experience to NADA," said NADA President Peter Welch. "With Peter at the helm of Dealership Operations, NADA will be able to continue providing our member dealers and their employees with innovative educational and training programs designed to meet the challenges of automotive retailing both now and well into the future."

Fong replaces John Lyboldt, who left NADA last year to become president of the Alexandria, Va.,-based Truckload Carriers Association.

GM CEO Says ‘Undervalued’ Carmaker Can Sustain Profit Long Term

General Motors Co. Chief Executive Officer Mary Barra considers the largest U.S. automaker undervalued. It’s easy to see why. After record profit last year and higher earnings in the first quarter, GM shares are down 12 percent this year. Slowing growth in U.S. auto sales and long-term threats from auto industry interlopers like ride-sharing firm Uber Technologies Inc. and self-driving car developer Google are among investors’ concerns. Barra made the case in an interview with Bloomberg Television that GM can handle a downturn and sustain profits if the economy slumps in the next few years. The company also is making investments in ride sharing and self-driving cars to ensure its long-term future.

Hyundai Motor Scion Ventures Into Luxury Cars With Genesis Brand

Hyundai Motor Co. Chairman Chung Mong Koo proved the South Korean automaker can build reliable, value-for-money cars by beating Toyota Motor Corp. and Volkswagen AG in benchmark U.S. quality surveys. His son now wants to show Hyundai can be synonymous with luxury, too. Hyundai will start sales of its new G80 mid-sized sedan in South Korea next month, the second of a six-model lineup planned for its burgeoning premium marque called Genesis. Vice Chairman Chung Eui Sun, the son of the chairman, has been fronting the brand, introducing it in Seoul in November, then announcing plans to spin it off into a standalone division at the Detroit auto show two months later.

Infiniti Considers Offering Highway Self-Driving on New Models

Infiniti is considering rolling out highway self-driving capabilities for most new models, its president said [Tuesday], potentially overtaking German rivals in a race to offer autonomous driving. Executives for Chinese and global automakers speaking at final day of the Global Automotive Forum in Chongqing urged the industry to pursue autonomous driving as an advance that will reduce congestion and traffic deaths. Autonomous driving on highways is considered the first step to a fully self-driving car. So far few brands have made the technology available to customers.

VW's Skoda Brand Mulls U.S. Sales

Volkswagen Group's Skoda unit is considering whether to sell cars in the U.S. where its parent is mired in a diesel emissions scandal. A Skoda spokesman said the Czech value brand is examining the potential of markets where it is not yet present. "That includes North America," the spokesman told Automotive News Europe. No decision has been made, he said. Skoda has filed several trademarks at the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office, the spokesman said.

71% of Dealers See Used Sales Rise in April

With rising off-lease vehicle volume being described as a “tailwind,” the April dealer survey conducted by KeyBanc Capital Markets indicated that 71 percent of respondents posted an increase in used-vehicle sales during the month. But not only did the remaining 29 percent of dealers surveyed sustain a drop in used turns, it might have been to a degree that might have triggered a department staff meeting. All 29 percent of the stores that experienced softening monthly sales had a decrease of at least 10 percent, according to the survey results shared with Auto Remarketing on Monday.

Toyota Looking to Texas Sun for HQ Power

Toyota will use solar panels on three parking structures at its Texas headquarters now under construction, which the company said will provide about 25 percent of its power needs. The 7.75-megawatt system will be the largest office-site solar installation in Texas among non-utility companies, according to Toyota. It will reduce carbon dioxide emissions by 7,122 metric tons, nearly equivalent to the CO2 emissions from 1,000 homes’ electricity use for a year. Toyota is seeking high-level environmental certification for its new Plano, Texas, campus and using renewable energy on the site is part of that effort, the company said in a statement.
