Audi Sees Dealer Network as Key Trump Card in Mobility Play

Audi of America is looking hard at ways to involve its dealer network in its mobility play, a strategy the automaker sees as both a competitive advantage and a necessity as new transportation business models emerge. A ready-made distribution network is something the OEs have that many of the upstart mobility providers can’t match – at least not as quickly, easily or inexpensively. Not exploiting that advantage would be a huge mistake, says Scott Reynolds, Audi mobility business development manager.

Senate Dems Grill Transport Chief over Air Bag Recall

Democrats on the U.S. Senate Commerce Committee grilled Transportation Secretary Anthony Foxx on Wednesday over reports that multiple automakers are still equipping cars with air bags made by Japanese supplier Takata that are set to be recalled because of defective inflators. Sen. Bill Nelson, D-Fla., said four automakers have admitted to equipping some of their newest vehicles with the same kind of air bag inflators that have been placed under recall by the transportation department’s National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

U.S. Auto Regulator Says Self-Driving Cars Must Be Twice as Safe

Self-driving cars must increase safety at least twofold to make a real dent in the 38,000 lives lost on American roads last year, the U.S. auto-safety chief said as the federal government prepares to release rules for autonomous vehicles next month. “I’d actually like to throw the gauntlet down,” Mark Rosekind, head of the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, said Wednesday at a conference in Novi, Michigan. “We need to start with two times better. We need to set a higher bar if we expect safety to actually be a benefit here.”

Autonomous Car Sales Will Hit 21 Million by 2035, IHS Says

United States will be an early leader in deploying autonomous vehicle technology, an effort that will eventually help put nearly 21 million self-driving cars on the world’s roads by 2035, IHS Automotive predicts in a report released Tuesday. The forecast, which is much higher than previous estimates, is influenced by recent research and development by major automakers, suppliers, and tech companies as well as regulatory changes and a wave of investments, according to IHS Automotive, a division of IHS Inc.
