Takata airbags have 50% chance of rupturing, NHTSA says

U.S. officials warned owners of certain 2001-03 Honda and Acura vehicles to stop driving their cars, citing new data showing the vehicles’ Takata airbag inflators have as much as a 50 percent chance of exploding in a crash. The warning [Thursday] applies to about 313,000 units of the 2001-02 Honda Civic and Accord, the 2002-03 Acura TL, 2002 Honda CR-V and Odyssey, 2003 Acura CL and 2003 Honda Pilot that were recalled from 2008-11 for Takata inflators that have not yet been repaired.

U.S. Congress, TIME and Ally Financial Honor TIME Dealer of the Year Kitty Van Bortel

In recognition as the 2016 TIME Dealer of the Year, Ally Financial presented an $11,000 grant to the Breast Cancer Coalition of Rochester, N.Y., on behalf of Mary Catherine “Kitty” Van Bortel.

“We are delighted to recognize Kitty Van Bortel and her efforts to make a difference in her community,” said Tom Kolski, regional vice president of sales at Ally, during an event held at Van Bortel Ford in East Rochester, N.Y., on June 30. “The TIME Dealer of the Year program was created to highlight dealers across the country that give back to their communities, and Kitty is a wonderful example of a business and community leader who cares deeply and gives generously.”

During the event, U.S. Rep. Chris Collins (R-N.Y.) presented a framed copy of remarks, which he inserted into the Congressional Record honoring Van Bortel, and an American flag that was flown over the U.S. Capitol in her honor. Bill Fox, 2015 NADA chairman and current board member, attended the event on behalf of the New York State Auto Dealers Association.

Van Bortel was selected from a group of 50 nominees across the country, and was named the winner at the 2016 NADA Convention and Expo in Las Vegas on April 1. The award honors franchised new-vehicle dealers for exceptional dealership performance and distinguished community service.

June 2016 U.S. LV Sales Thread: Industry May Hit 11-year High

U.S. automakers are expected to deliver 1.57 million light vehicles this month. A daily sales rate of 60,314 over 26 selling days represents a 2.5% improvement from like-2015 (25 days), with total volume for the month rising 6.6%. The forecasted seasonally adjusted annual rate of sales for the month is 17.30 million units, shy of last month’s 17.37 million SAAR, but ahead of the current 3-month SAAR (17.0 million) and the year-to-date SAAR through May (17.2 million).

BMW to Deliver Self-Driving Car by 2021

Germany luxury automaker BMW said Friday that it would introduce a fully self-driving car by 2021 after striking a technology partnership with Intel and Mobileye. The announcement reflects a significant step forward for autonomous vehicles, marking the first time a major automaker has committed to a timeline for a car that doesn't require human interference.

NADA Foundation Emergency Relief Fund Assists Dealership Employees Affected by West Virginia Flooding

The Emergency Relief Fund of the National Automobile Dealers Charitable Foundation has been mobilized to assist dealership employees affected by the devastating floods in West Virginia. The Fund offers emergency assistance to dealership employees who have been affected by unforeseen emergencies and natural disasters, such as hurricanes, tornadoes, fires, etc.

$14,750 has been distributed to 12 dealership employees in West Virginia [(8) Greenbrier Chevrolet Buick/Ford, (1) Royal Subaru, (1) Lewis Auto Group, (1) Smith Company Motor Car, (1) Joe Holland Chevrolet].

Established in 1992, the Emergency Relief Fund has provided over $5 million to more than 8,700 families.
