Volkswagen Gets Initial Approval of $14.7 Billion Settlement With U.S. Drivers

A federal judge granted preliminary approval to Volkswagen AG ’s $14.7 billion settlement with U.S. drivers of diesel-powered vehicles on Tuesday, clearing the way for the company to put the plan into action and put the emissions scandal behind it. The German auto maker plans to hire between 250 and 300 people to oversee settlement claims and processing; those workers would be overseen by 40 employees from Volkswagen Group of America, its U.S. business, a company attorney said in court.

Safety Features Score Big, Boosting New-Vehicle Appeal, J.D. Power Study Finds

Popular driver-assist technologies help make vehicles considerably more appealing to their owners, according to the J.D. Power 2016 U.S. Automotive Performance, Execution and Layout (APEAL) Study, released today. The study finds that new vehicles equipped with safety features such as blind spot monitoring and low speed collision avoidance have overall APEAL scores substantially higher than similar vehicles without the technologies.

Fiat Chrysler Revamps U.S. Sales Reporting Amid Federal Probes

Fiat Chrysler Automobiles said on Tuesday it had revised more than five years of monthly U.S. vehicle sales figures to reflect a new reporting method, amid an investigation by federal authorities into claims of inflated sales figures. FCA stopped short of admitting any wrongdoing and said it was not correcting past sales reports, but adjusting its internal practices to avoid miscalculations and better account for sales.

Porsche Plans 1,400 New Jobs for Tesla-Fighting Sports Car

Porsche will add more than 1,400 new jobs as it ramps up development of its first all-electric sports car to challenge Tesla Motors Inc. and plans an initial annual production volume of more than 15,000 vehicles per year. Some 900 positions will be created in production, 300 in development and 200 in administration for the project dubbed “J1,” personnel chief Andreas Haffner said Tuesday at a press briefing in the brand’s hometown of Stuttgart, Germany. Porsche, a luxury division of Volkswagen AG, is also seeking about 100 information-technology specialists, 50 digital experts and more apprentices, part of an industrywide hiring push as carmakers try to compete with the likes of Google and Apple Inc. in connected-car technology.

Online registration and hotel selection for the 2017 NADA Convention and Expo in New Orleans is now open. NADA members and their managers who register by September 9 will receive a $100 discount.



NADA, founded in 1917, will kick off yearlong events commemorating its 100-year anniversary with NADA 100 Carnival in New Orleans. The exclusive event for NADA members, international affiliates and guests will be held at Mardi Gras World on Thursday, January 26. The Carnival will feature cuisine from top New Orleans restaurants, as well as musical entertainment from Foreigner, Cowboy Mouth and jazz favorites. The NADA member and manager registration fee includes admission to the NADA 100 Carnival.

Convention speakers include comedian Jim Gaffigan, NADA Chairman Jeff Carlson, inspirational speaker Amy Purdy and NADA Vice Chairman Mark Scarpelli. A fifth speaker will be announced in the coming weeks. The four-day NADA Convention, which runs from January 26 to 29, includes dealer franchise meetings, workshops, an exhibitor showcase and numerous networking events. Click here to register.
