Takata Air-Bag Report Clears Way for Cost Talks With Carmakers

Takata Corp. said the German research institute it hired to investigate the root cause of its defective air-bag inflators submitted a report, clearing the way for crucial talks to begin with customers over how to split billions of dollars in recall costs. The air-bag maker received the report from Fraunhofer Institute in July, spokeswoman Akiko Watanabe said Friday by phone. The report doesn’t specify whether responsibility rests with the supplier or carmakers, she said. Automakers and Takata plan to hold discussions on how to divide up the recall costs, which are difficult to estimate at this point, the company said in its quarterly earnings statement released on Friday.

Different Economists, Different Auto-Sales Outlooks

Sean McAlinden and Steven Szakaly are fellow economists who once worked together at the Center for Automotive Research. But they offer markedly different views of the auto industry’s health in coming years. McAlinden, CAR’s vice president-strategic studies and chief economist, paints a gloomy picture of falling sales and automakers scrambling to prop them up. Szakaly, chief economist for the National Automobile Dealers Assn., is more upbeat. He anticipates issues here and there but sees healthy auto sales ahead, in part because of young Millennials increasing their earning power and becoming serious car buyers.

Mercedes Is About to Unveil an Entire Fleet of Electric Vehicles

Mercedes-Benz is planning its own distinct line of electric vehicles, challenging BMW and Tesla Motors Inc. in a bet that alternative-fuel cars have the potential to become profitable. Mercedes will add two electric sport utility vehicles and two sedans, according to two people familiar with the plan, who asked not to be named because the details haven’t been disclosed. Mercedes will create a new sub-brand for the cars, though a name hasn’t been chosen yet, one of the people said. Chief Executive Officer Dieter Zetsche said in June that the company planned to unveil an electric car at the Paris motor show in September.
