U.S. Market Still Has Upside, Some Industry CEOs Say

U.S. auto sales still have room to grow, some auto industry leaders said this week, casting aside worries that the six-year expansion is about to lose steam. While some analysts and automakers believe the peak has passed, some top industry executives attending the 2016 J.P. Morgan Auto Conference for automakers, suppliers and Wall Street analysts in New York on Tuesday say not so fast.

Dealership Throughput Forecast to Drop

For the first time in seven years, U.S. dealership new-vehicle throughput -- the average number of units sold per store -- is expected to decline, according to most light-vehicle sales forecasts and data from Urban Science, a retail consulting firm. Urban Science, of Detroit, reported the average dealership throughput last year was 966. The company forecasts throughput will be 960 this year.

Mercedes-Benz Stays on Course to Win 2016 Sales Crown From BMW

Mercedes-Benz sales through July rose at more than twice the pace of arch-rival BMW’s, keeping it on course to reclaim the luxury-car lead this year thanks to a sportier line-up and a new crop of SUVs. Deliveries by Mercedes jumped 12 percent to 1.17 million vehicles in the first seven months of the year, compared to a 5.6 percent increase for BMW AG’s namesake brand. That put Mercedes more than 30,000 cars ahead of its rival. Third-place Audi gained 5.2 percent to 1.1 million vehicles.

Cars Drive Past Mobile Phones, Tablets as Wireless Growth Leader

Internet-connected cars and other everyday products have become the fastest-growing part of the U.S. wireless industry, adding more links than mobile phones and tablets combined in the second quarter. AT&T Inc. dominated revenue in connected devices, with the company connecting cars to its network at twice the pace of tablets, analyst Chetan Sharma said in his quarterly wireless industry report. AT&T should reach 10 million connected car subscriptions soon, he estimated. Verizon Communications Inc. is actively adding connected devices as well.

Online registration and hotel selection for the 2017 NADA Convention and Expo in New Orleans is now open. NADA members and their managers who register by September 9 will receive a $100 discount.



NADA, founded in 1917, will kick off yearlong events commemorating its 100-year anniversary with NADA 100 Carnival in New Orleans. The exclusive event for NADA members, international affiliates and guests will be held at Mardi Gras World on Thursday, January 26. The Carnival will feature cuisine from top New Orleans restaurants, as well as musical entertainment from Foreigner, Cowboy Mouth and jazz favorites. The NADA member and manager registration fee includes admission to the NADA 100 Carnival. The four-day NADA Convention, which runs from January 26 to 29, includes keynote speakers, dealer franchise meetings, workshops, an Expo and numerous networking events. Click here to register.
