EPA Strengthens Greenhouse-Gas Efficiency Goals for Big Rigs

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, resisting lobbying from the trucking industry, unveiled tough new regulations to reduce carbon emissions from tractor-trailers and other long-haul trucks in support of a key policy goal of President Barack Obama’s administration. The EPA and the U.S. Transportation Department on Tuesday issued regulations that require trucks become more efficient through 2027. The final rules achieve 10 percent more carbon emission and fuel-consumption reductions than last year’s proposed rules, likely raising the price tag price for such vehicles but cutting operating costs. A big part of the greenhouse-gas reductions are expected to come from engine improvements, cutting fuel consumption by up to 5 percent....

Editor's note:
The final 2018-2027 Phase II Truck fuel economy/greenhouse gas rule is massive, very complex, and technology-forcing.  It will require extensive analysis to fully understand the large and challenging investments manufacturers will need to make to comply with it. During the rulemaking process, NADA/ATD testified before and filed several sets of detailed comments with EPA and NHTSA.  In addition, NADA/ATD met several times with agency and White House staff to raise key issues and concerns. Some of those issues were addressed satisfactorily in the final rule; others were not.  Of greatest concern is that at some time during rule’s 10-year life, compliance costs will translate into higher vehicle prices which may not pencil out for many new truck customers, especially smaller fleets and owner operators. To the extent that happens, the demand for new trucks, tractors, pick-ups, and large vans will fall, reducing employment throughout the supplier, factory, dealership chain while leaving hoped-for environmental and energy security gains unrealized.

'Moderate' Number of Damaged Vehicles Expected from Louisiana Flooding

As rivers across much of southern Louisiana slowly recede from record high levels, it remains unclear how many vehicles have been damaged or destroyed because of flooding. The Louisiana Automobile Dealers Association also took a hit. Although the group's office in Baton Rouge didn’t flood, association President Will Green said Tuesday the phone and computer systems have been down. Green said late Tuesday that about 70 to 80 dealerships or their employees have been affected by the flooding -- and the number could grow as flooding spreads to other areas of the state. Green said the National Automobile Dealers Charitable Foundation’s Emergency Relief Fund will provide aid to employees affected by the flooding.

Why GM Wants To Take Over Lyft And Why Lyft Is Saying No

General Motors apparently wants to buy the 89% of ride hailing/sharing company Lyft it does not already own. And, according to technology site The Information, Lyft turned GM down. Talking to a couple of people with knowledge of the situation, here is what seems to be going on. General Motors has made the calculation that ride-hailing services like Lyft and Uber are not a passing fad. Yellow taxis in cities are finally beginning to battle back with app-based services, but business and pleasure travelers alike are increasingly preferring the ride sharing services....
