Louisiana Floods Close or Disrupt 60-80 Dealerships

Louisiana Automobile Dealers Association President Will Green said the 60 to 80 dealerships in flooded areas are primarily working through staff shortages because of employees who can’t physically make it to the store or are dealing with the loss of their own homes or vehicles. Green told Automotive News on Wednesday that communication has been tough. His office in Baton Rouge is now back online after flooding took out the phone and computer systems, he said, and the association is “just putting those pieces back together.” Green also focused on helping community members get their lives back together. He pointed earlier to the National Automobile Dealers Charitable Foundation’s Emergency Relief Fund to help employees of dealerships. Now, he says dealerships are making their way into the community.

Bosch Worked 'Hand-in-Glove' with VW in Emissions Fraud: Lawyers

German auto supplier Robert Bosch GmbH was a "knowing and active participant" in a decade-long scheme by Volkswagen AG to evade U.S. emissions laws, according to lawyers for U.S. owners of polluting VW diesel vehicles. In a court filing late on Tuesday in U.S. District Court in San Francisco, the lawyers cited confidential documents turned over by the German automaker to plaintiffs attorneys in making the new allegations against the auto supplier.

Genesis Stand-Alone Dealers Likely in Five Years

Hyundai targets 2021 as the date its new Genesis luxury brand will require stand-alone stores in the U.S. However, the parent company is not forcing the issue, says a top Hyundai official, hoping the need for separate showrooms is dictated “organically” by a growing lineup and increasing sales. “What we told dealers is, we’re coming out with six new Genesises over the next five years and oh, by the way, we’re coming out with 15 new or significantly redesigned Hyundais over the same period,” Hyundai Motor America CEO Dave Zuchowski says during a ’17 Genesis G90 media preview [in Vancouver, Canada.]

Editor's note:
Zuchowski will speak and join a panel discussion on CAFE, ZEV, electric cars during AutoConference LA on Tuesday, November 15. The half-day conference, hosted by NADA and J.D. Power, will be held the day before press days at the 2016 Los Angeles Auto Show. For more information or to register, visit www.autoconferencela.com.

Detroit Hiring Talent in Silicon Valley for Race Against Google

For the first time in America’s industrial history, the center for automotive technology is drifting away from Detroit. Ford Motor Co., aiming to put fully autonomous vehicles into the economy by 2021, announced that it’s doubling the size of its office in Silicon Valley to 260 people and investing in four companies that are key to building self-driving cars. The carmaker’s move follows more than $1 billion in investments made by Detroit-based General Motors Co. in a pair of California technology companies earlier this year to keep up with Google’s autonomous-car project and Uber Technologies Inc.’s ride-hailing business.
