Ohio Dealer Groups Donate $15,000 to NADA Foundation for Louisiana Flood Relief Efforts

COLUMBUS and BRECKSVILLE, Ohio – New-car dealership groups in Ohio and Greater Cleveland on Thursday announced a collective $15,000 donation to an NADA Foundation fund that is providing financial assistance to dealership families impacted by the flooding in southern Louisiana. The Ohio Automobile Dealers Association donated $10,000; and the Greater Cleveland Automobile Dealers Association donated $5,000.

"We're grateful for NADA spearheading this effort and are fortunate to be in a position to help," said Zach Doran, OADA president. “Our thoughts and prayers are with those employees in need at dealerships in the affected areas, and we hope that our contribution makes a difference in helping get people back on their feet.”

Dealership families displaced by the flooding can apply for financial assistance through the National Automobile Dealers Charitable Foundation's Emergency Relief Fund, which provides funds immediately after natural disasters.

“When others are in need, auto dealers are always there to lend a hand,” said Lou Vitantonio, GCADA president. “We feel there is no better way to show support for dealership families affected by the flooding in Louisiana then by donating to the NADA Foundation’s Emergency Relief Fund.”

In an NADA video released on Thursday, NADA President Peter Welch described the damage to homes in the flood-ravaged areas of Baton Rouge and urged auto dealers to support the flood victims.

"We're asking every dealership in the United States donate $1,000 to adopt a dealership family affected by the flooding. Our dealerships are one big family. When a member of our family hurts, we all hurt,” Welch said. “We are extremely grateful for the generous donations from the dealer groups in Ohio, but we are a long way from reaching our $2 million goal. We are urging all dealer associations and dealers throughout the county to donate to the fund.”

VW to Lower U.S. Prices in Uphill Battle to Lift Plunging Sales

Volkswagen AG is promising U.S. dealers a wider model range and lower pricing as the automaker tries to broaden its appeal and push the reset button in the world’s second-biggest car market in the wake of record fines and plunging sales. “We are getting the product we’ve been asking for," Alan Brown, chairman of VW’s U.S. dealer council, said in a phone interview. Volkswagen is also planning to cut the sticker price on cars to boost sales and “is looking at this with a volume mindset,” Brown said.

VW told dealerships about the shift to a more mass-market strategy for the brand as part of a settlement to compensate them for losses incurred from the emissions cheating. VW on Thursday agreed to pay 652 dealers about $1.2 billion, a person familiar with the matter said. The German automaker said it will make cash payments and provide additional benefits to dealers to resolve their claims, without providing any details.

Amazon Pushes Deeper Into Auto Industry With Research Site

Amazon.com Inc. is pushing deeper into the auto industry and car-parts market with a new website featuring reviews, images and specifications on thousands of new and classic car models. Customers can research cars on the new Amazon Vehicles website, they just can’t buy one there. The site is designed to complement the company’s other car initiatives such as Amazon Automotive, a marketplace featuring millions of parts and accessories for cars, trucks and motorcycles, and Amazon Garage, which lets shoppers save vehicles in their profiles to make it easier to find parts they need. Shoppers also can book and pay for routine auto maintenance such as oil changes, tire rotation and battery installation from screened professionals in their neighborhoods through Amazon Home Services.

Amazon is also partnering with Hyundai Motor Co. to bring new cars to customers interested in taking on-demand test drives through a program called “Prime Now. Drive Now.” And it is working with auto manufacturers to integrate its voice-command technology Alexa in new cars that would let people start their cars and set the temperature using their voices.

FTC Webinar: September 8
FTC Issues Warning to Sellers of Certain VW Vehicles

The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) has asked NADA to provide its members with a business blog that cautions sellers of certain VW and Audi diesel vehicles (including dealers of other brands) not to make false claims regarding the recent proposed consent orders concerning those vehicles that the Volkswagen Group of America has entered into with the FTC, other governmental agencies, and owners and lessees of the vehicles.  Details of the proposed settlements are available at VWCourtSettlement.com.  In order to enhance dealers’ understanding of both the VW buyback program that is part of the proposed settlement and the concerns set forth by the FTC in its business blog, NADA has arranged for the FTC to present information on these topics in an NADA University Online webinar that will take place on Thursday, Sept. 8, 2016 from 1 p.m. – 2 p.m. ET.  Dealers and their representatives may click here to register.
