NADA Chairman: Vehicle Affordability Is Under Attack -- And Not Just From Washington, D.C.

DETROIT – In NADA’s upcoming annual policy outline to the Automotive Press Association in Detroit, NADA Chairman Jeff Carlson will discuss his association’s ongoing efforts to push back against the numerous threats – emanating from Washington and elsewhere – to vehicle affordability, and to the consumer savings that result from a vibrant franchised dealer network.

TIME & DATE: 11:30 a.m., Wednesday, Oct. 5, 2016
LOCATION:
Detroit Athletic Club

Carlson is a Ford and Subaru dealer in Colorado, and represents Colorado’s new-car and -truck dealers on NADA’s board of directors. NADA represents nearly 16,500 new-car and -truck dealerships, with both domestic and international franchises.

U.S. Auto Sales Expected to Fall in Sept. for Second Straight Month

U.S. new-vehicle sales are projected to decline for a second consecutive month, even as incentive spending reaches a record high. The forecasts reinforce the notion that industry sales have leveled off after six consecutive years of gains coming out of the recession. But analysts say the market is not on the brink of a downturn, either. The forecasts call for a seasonally adjusted, annualized selling rate of 17.4 million to 17.7 million. That would be higher than last month’s rate of 16.97 million but below the year-ago rate of 18.04 million.

FTC Charges Auto Group with Using Deceptive and Unfair Sales and Financing Tactics

The Federal Trade Commission has charged nine Los Angeles-area auto dealerships and their owners with using a wide range of deceptive and unfair sales and financing practices. The FTC’s action filed in the U.S. District Court for the Central District of California seeks to end these practices and return money to consumers. This is the FTC’s first action against an auto dealer for “yo-yo” financing tactics: using deception or other unlawful pressure tactics to coerce consumers who have signed contracts and driven off the dealership lots into accepting a different deal. The FTC also alleges that the defendants packed extra, unauthorized charges for “add-ons,” or aftermarket products and services, into car deals financed by consumers. The Commission vote authorizing the filing of the complaint against the auto group defendants was 2-1, with Commissioner Ohlhausen dissenting.

Q&A: The Data Your Car Collects and Who Can Use It

Your car knows more about you than you think. Newer cars that connect to the internet can collect vast amounts of data about drivers, such as where you went to dinner, if you broke the speed limit or if your seat belt was buckled. When you buy a car, you cede data control to your car company. Most automakers say they won't sell information without an owner's consent. But they're not legally required to inform you if they do. Car data is about to become big business. A new report from consulting firm McKinsey says automotive data could be worth $450 billion to $750 billion globally by 2030.

Luxury Automakers to Tesla: We're Coming for You

The message from Dieter Zetsche was clear. Shortly after the Daimler chairman unveiled Mercedes-Benz's concept electric SUV at the Paris Motor Show Thursday, CNBC asked if the German automaker was fighting back against Tesla and its growing hold on the luxury electric car market. "If you want to interpret it that way it's fine," Zetsche told CNBC. "Tesla is a successful electric automotive company...[but] we want to be No. 1 by latest 2025 in the electric premium segment." Make no mistake: Mercedes, BMW, Audi and practically every other luxury automaker is gunning for Tesla with a slew of high-end electric vehicles scheduled to come out over the next several years.
