EPA Under Fire for Zero Emission Funding in VW Deal

Lawmakers in the U.S. House raised questions Tuesday about the inclusion of a provision in Volkswagen’s $14.7 billion settlement with federal regulators over emission cheating that requires the German automaker to pump money into zero-emission vehicles such as electric cars. Volkswagen is required to contribute $2 billion to zero-emission vehicle research under the agreement that was reached between the company and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and Department of Justice after it was caught rigging hundreds of thousands of cars to cheat U.S. pollution standards. Republicans on the House Energy and Commerce Committee argued the zero emissions clause in Volkswagen’s deal could give the company an unfair leg up in the U.S. electric-car market.

U.S. Judge Throws Out Emissions Fraud Lawsuit Against Mercedes

A U.S. judge in New Jersey on Tuesday threw out a proposed class action lawsuit alleging that automaker Mercedes misled consumers about emissions standards in "BlueTec Clean Diesel" vehicles. U.S. District Judge Jose Linares said the plaintiffs did not have standing to bring the case. Plaintiffs claimed Mercedes falsely advertised the BlueTec vehicles as having lower emissions. They said that they later found that the emissions were higher than U.S. standards permitted.

Mexico Overtakes Canada as No. 2 U.S. Exporter Ahead of Trump

Mexico is overtaking Canada as the No. 2 exporter of goods to the U.S. this year, in a sign of how economic ties have deepened between the two countries even as the relationship is being questioned by President-elect Donald Trump. The growing links between Mexico and U.S. hinge on motor vehicles. Mexico has won new factories over the past six years from Toyota Motor Corp., Volkswagen AG’s luxury Audi unit, Kia Motors Corp. and BMW AG -- up to $25.9 billion in new auto investments since 2010, according to the Center for Automotive Research in Ann Arbor, Michigan -- fueling car shipments totaling $90 billion in the first 10 months. That’s versus $54 billion from Canada.
