Supreme Court Rejects GM Bid to Block Ignition Switch Suits

General Motors Co.'s bid to block hundreds of lawsuits, potentially worth billions of dollars, over a deadly ignition-switch defect broke down on Monday when the U.S. Supreme Court refused to hear its appeal claiming the suits were barred by the No. 1 American automaker's 2009 bankruptcy.

AutoNation First-Quarter Profit Rises, Sees Increase Ahead

AutoNation Inc., the largest U.S. auto retail chain, on Tuesday reported a larger quarterly net profit that beat expectations and said it expect vehicle sales to rise in the second quarter with a higher gross profit per vehicle sold. During the first quarter new-car sales at the Fort Lauderdale, Florida-based company dropped more than 4 percent to 75,798 units, while used-car sales rose more than 4 percent to 60,608 units.

Ghosn Wants Mitsubishi to Reform, Rules Out Nissan Merger

A full merger of Japanese car makers Mitsubishi Motors Corp. and Nissan Motor Co. Ltd. is not on the table, Carlos Ghosn, chairman of both firms, said on Tuesday. "Full merger is not on the table. We want Mitsubishi to reform itself," said Ghosn, who was attending the opening ceremony of a new Mitsubishi factory on the outskirts of Jakarta.

FCA Provides Waymo with Vans for Self-Drive Tests

Fiat Chrysler Automobiles is boosting its partnership with Google-backed Waymo by providing 500 more minivans to the California-based self-driving technology company. Chrysler will begin production on the Pacifica Hybrids next month. Once delivered, they will be equipped for autonomous-vehicle testing.

Apple Has Reportedly Hired Ex-NASA and Tesla Staffers to Boost Its Self-Driving Car Effort

Apple has hired former NASA employees, robotics experts and ex-Tesla staffers to form part of its driverless car teams, according to official documents released to two media outlets. On Friday, the Wall Street Journal and Business Insider obtained a permit that was issued to Apple by Californian authorities on March 14 which granted the tech giant permission to test autonomous vehicles.

Amazon.com Inc. has created a team focused on driverless-vehicle technology to help navigate the retail giant’s role in the shake-up of transportation, according to people briefed on the matter.
