Discounted Cars Benefit Buyers, but May Spell Trouble for Industry

Big cash discounts are making a comeback in the car business. Now that sales of new cars and trucks are slowing down, automakers and their dealers are starting to lop thousands of dollars off sticker prices — sometimes slashing the final cost by a third — a sales tactic that helps consumers but has led to industry troubles in the past.

Maryland Limits Automakers' Sales-Effectiveness Mandates

A Maryland bill fortifying dealers against uniform sales standards was signed into law last week, setting rules on how automakers can measure retailer performance in the state. House Bill 1120 champions so-called fairness requirements when calculating a dealership's performance metrics -- sometimes known as retail sales-effectiveness ratings -- by requiring automakers to take into account the influences of demographic and geographic factors.

Volkswagen AG on Wednesday faced an agitated group of shareholders at its annual meeting and showed its strategy for trying to fully bounce back from the diesel emissions scandal that has so far cost it in excess of $20 billion in fines, penalties and compensation to customers.

NADA's ‘A Dealer Guide to the FTC Used Car Rule’ Now Available

A Dealer Guide to the FTC Used Car Rule (L12) is now available at NADA University Online. It provides an overview of the revised federal Used Car Rule, includes details about the revised Buyers Guide, instructions on properly completing the Buyers Guide form, and with a number of templates and other examples. The guide is available to NADA and ATD members only (at no charge). Members needing assistance accessing the guide should call NADA customer service at 800.557.6232.

NADAShow 2018 Calls for Workshop Proposals

The NADAShow 2018, which will be held in Las Vegas from March 22 to 25, is looking for experts to present on workshop topics that are relevant to new-car dealers and their managers. The deadline for submitting a proposal is 11:59 p.m. ET on June 26, 2017. 

The workshop tracks are: Dealer/Executive; Digital and Traditional Marketing; Legal and Regulatory Compliance; Employee Recruiting, Hiring and Retention; Fixed Operations (Parts, Service and Body Shop); and Variable Operations (Sales, Business Office and F&I).
