FTC Revises Fuel Economy Advertising Guide

The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) has revised its Guide Concerning Fuel Economy Advertising for New Automobiles. The Guide, which takes effect on October 19, 2017, governs fuel economy advertising for new light-duty automobiles required to have fuel economy labels. The revised Guide reflects changes made in 2011 by EPA and NHTSA to their labelling mandates and guidance once provided in a separate FTC Alternate Fuel Labelling Guide that was withdrawn in 2013. The revised Guide states that it is deceptive to misrepresent, directly or by implication, the fuel economy or driving range of an automobile and makes suggestions as to how to advertise fuel economy information without being deceptive.

NADA will soon issue an updated version of its Driven guide on fuel economy advertising. Until then, you can direct questions to NADA Regulatory Affairs at regulatoryaffairs@nada.org or 703.821.7040.

Daimler to Invest $1 Billion in Alabama Plant

Daimler AG plans to invest $1 billion in its Alabama manufacturing operations and start production of a fully electric sport-utility vehicle, a move that comes as the German auto maker expands its U.S. footprint and global electrification drive.

The company will begin production of an electric SUV early next decade at its Tuscaloosa plant and begin construction next year of a nearby facility to assemble battery systems for use in those and other vehicles, according to people familiar with its plans. Combined, the new plans are expected to add as many as 600 new jobs. The new SUV will be sold under the Mercedes-Benz EQ subbrand, according to the people with knowledge of the plans.

New-Car Incentives Skyrocketing As Automakers Dig Deep To Move The Metal

September is traditionally clearance month in the auto industry, and since Chrysler first offered cash-back rebates in 1975, that’s meant manufacturers slapping incentives on the hoods of slower-selling models to help dealers clear their existing stocks of what are about to become stale goods.

For better or worse (depending on one's perspective), car companies are becoming increasingly dependent on cash incentives, subvented leases and cut-rate financing to help bolster their sales. Nine of the 10 best-selling models in the industry are being offered with special deals this month (the exception being the Honda CR-V), and that includes the top-selling Ford F-150 pickup truck, with up to $6,000 cash back, depending on the trim level and configuration.
