WardsAuto e-Dealer 100: Standouts Tell How They Do Digital

Internet sales success is a marriage of high technology and old-time customer service at the Phil Long Dealerships, which operate 14 franchises and 24 rooftops in Colorado and New Mexico. “It really comes down to having information (on your website) quick, visible and easy to use,” says Michael Cimino, the group’s vice president and partner. “The more you can make it any of that, the more cars you’re going to sell. It’s as simple as that.”

“If a dealer wants to stay ahead of the curve, they need to educate themselves and go to the [NADA Show] (formerly the NADA Convention and Expo) and spend time with the vendors to see how those systems work, and then collaborate with their general managers to see how that works for their store,” he says. “They ought to stay abreast of modern technology because it’s getting better and better. “There may be something better just around the corner. You’ve got to be aware of it.”

House Makes Final Tweaks to Tax Bill Before Committee Vote

As they await the unveiling of the Senate GOP tax plan Thursday, Republicans on the House Ways and Means Committee were scrambling to revise their own bill after changes made this week pushed its cost over the limit needed to pass it through the Senate on a simple majority vote. The committee was expected to approve the House bill later Thursday on a party line vote after making additional changes.

Carlos Ghosn Says Car Ownership Is Here to Stay

Personal car ownership isn’t going anywhere, regardless of the rise of Uber Technologies Inc. and ride-sharing, according to the man who may oversee more auto sales than anyone else this year.

Global vehicle sales will continue to expand, with alternative forms of mobility making only a marginal impact or actually boosting demand, said Carlos Ghosn, the chairman of the alliance between Renault SA, Nissan Motor Co. and Mitsubishi Motors Corp.

“A lot of people think this is substitution. It’s not -- it’s addition,” Ghosn said in an interview Wednesday at Bloomberg’s The Year Ahead conference in New York. “The traditional business of building cars and selling cars and owning cars is going to continue.”

Can Ford Turn Itself Into a Tech Company?

Despite its pragmatic restraint, Ford has invested hundreds of millions in self-driving cars and is making surprising progress. In a report earlier this year, Navigant Research placed Ford at the top of its leader board, ahead of tech companies like Waymo and Uber as well as auto rivals like GM and Toyota, based on Ford’s advanced manufacturing capabilities coupled with its strides in software development.
