The dealership management team from Laurel Auto Group in Johnstown, Pa., attend a past NADA Show in New Orleans.

Michael Smith, president of Laurel Auto Group in Johnstown, Pa., will be sending 12 dealership employees from his management team to the NADA Show in Las Vegas next March.

“The educational workshops are the No. 1 reason, among my employees, to attend the NADA Show year after year after year,” said Smith, a NADA board member who is currently serving as chairman of NADA’s Dealership Operations Committee, which selects the workshop speakers and topics.

“We take the educational sessions very seriously. We always have and we always will,” he added. “And it’s because we see great value for the dollar expended. We get a great return on investment. I don’t think there’s a better training ROI in the industry that I know of than NADA, and I would challenge anybody to show me a better one.”

Now is the time to look over the schedule and plan accordingly. Workshops can be searched by track, date, topic and presenters in the advanced search feature. Click here for the full workshop schedule and list of presenters.

The new Distinguished Speaker Series includes four dynamic speakers who go beyond the NADA Show’s six traditional workshop tracks to discuss Leadership, Culture, Team Building, and Personal and Business Success. Click here for the list of speakers.

Auto Sector Escapes Big Hits in Senate Tax Bill

The auto industry fared better, on balance, in the tax bill that narrowly passed the Senate on Saturday than in the House version. Now the industry will try to hold onto those gains, or improve on them, as both chambers convene to craft a unified bill.

Dealerships won a reprieve when last-minute language was inserted in the Senate legislation to preserve full deductibility of floorplan interest -- mirroring the House measure.

The Senate is seeking to limit business interest deductibility to 30 percent of adjustable taxable income, and the original proposal would have included the traditional write-off of interest expense on vehicle inventories.

Industry officials say retailers heavily rely on interest-only loans to buy products they can showcase to customers. The specialized financing and interest deduction enables dealerships, often small businesses, to keep down the cost of holding inventory.

Editor’s note:  NADA successful fought for Sen. Rand Paul’s (R-Ky.) amendment to retain full deductibility on floor plan interest, a specialized type of business loan critical to the auto industry.  Without the amendment, the Senate tax plan would have likely put small businesses with high cost inventory at risk of paying higher taxes even when a business does not show a profit. GM Rolls Out Marketplace Shop-and-Drive App

An added feature in newer General Motors Co. vehicles allows drivers to shop on the go. Marketplace, an app appearing on GM’s infotainment screens beginning Tuesday, allows drivers to use their cars to order coffee, make a restaurant reservation or even buy chicken wings. It connects to a merchant’s native smartphone app and offers shortcuts to place saved food and drink orders, download coupons or — in the case of TGI Friday’s — reserve a table for dinner.

Nissanís Robo-Taxis Will Hit the Road in March

Nissan Motor  Co. will start testing robo-taxis on Japanese streets in March, the first step in rolling out a self-driving taxi service, as Japan’s top car makers struggle to keep pace with Detroit and Silicon Valley. General Motors Co. said last month it would have a fleet of self-driving taxis operating in big cities by 2019. Chief Executive Mary Barra said the company is “quarters, not years” away from fielding driverless cars.

Waymo LLC, the driverless car unit of Google parent Alphabet Inc., has 100 self-driving Chrysler Pacifica minivans on the streets of the Phoenix metro area, and has plans to field 500 more. The company recently showed off how the vehicles can operate without a safety driver monitoring the vehicle. Uber Technologies Inc. has ordered 24,000 Volvo sport-utility vehicles to convert into autonomous automobiles, with deliveries starting in 2019.

This CEO Sees Robot Taxis and Delivery Cars Coming in 2018

Self-driving vehicles will be ready to roll next year, though the work to make them affordable to individual consumers is still “in the first inning,” according to the CEO of a company working on the technology. Initial autonomous auto customers will be businesses deploying delivery vehicles and robot taxis, said Kevin Clark, the chief executive officer of Delphi Automotive Plc. Companies are motivated to eliminate the cost of drivers and better equipped to afford expensive self-driving tech than consumers.
