Analysts See Auto Demand Slipping Into Low Gear in 2018

Were the tepid car sales of 2017 the beginning of a new normal? Chances are, the new year will muddle the debate further. With a flurry of policy announcements expected out of Washington in 2018 -- and their potentially conflicting effects on the auto industry -- overall industry sales are expected to remain flat. Technology for self-driven cars and electric vehicles will continue to dominate the headlines for automakers and suppliers, as industry players strive to stake their claims on the fast-changing landscape. Meanwhile, car sales will remain on the "eroding plateau" trajectory for the year, with the final numbers fairly close to 2017’s expected annual sales of 17.1 million units. Which is not to say that there are no bright spots.

National Automobile Dealers Association

  • Forecasting sales of 16.7 million new cars and light trucks, as demand for light trucks, SUVs and crossovers continues to be very healthy
  • New-car dealerships to retail 15.3 million used vehicles in 2018 versus an expected 15.1 million used sales in 2017

Senate Won’t Vote on Self-Driving Car Bill in 2017: Thune

The Senate’s self-driving vehicle bill will have to wait until 2018, barring any last-minute maneuvers to attach it to what is expected to be a stripped-down continuing resolution, the bill’s author told Bloomberg Government Dec. 20. The AV START bill (S. 1885) would create the first national regulatory framework for self-driving vehicle technology being developed by companies like Alphabet Inc., Tesla Inc., and Lyft Inc.

Honda Set To Unveil New Prius Fighter

Honda has an impeccable reputation for quality and fuel economy, but when it comes to selling hybrid and electric vehicles, it has never done as well as rival Toyota for reasons that are hard to grasp. But the Japanese brand is going to take another whack at it when it introduces a new five-passenger vehicle at next month’s North American International Auto Show called “Insight,” the same name the company used for a previous slow-selling hybrid.

Uber Strikes Deal With Volvo to Bring Self-Driving Cars to Its Network

No one knows what the future of self-driving cars will look like, or how long it will take to get there. But every major player in the field is striking partnerships to be ready for the day when autonomous vehicles finally become mainstream. That includes Uber, which on Monday announced a new deal with Volvo. Under the agreement, Uber plans to purchase as many as 24,000 self-driving Volvos once the technology is production-ready, putting the vehicles into its extensive ride-hailing network.

2018 Dealership Workforce Study Now Open for Enrollment

Dealerships that participate by April 30, 2018, will receive two complimentary reports and a year’s subscription to the DWS Database and Search Tool

The 2018 Dealership Workforce Study (DWS) is now open for enrollment.

NADA and ATD members that complete a questionnaire and submit their payroll records by April 30, 2018 will receive two complimentary reports and a one-year subscription to the DWS Database and Search Tool.

The two complimentary reports are:
  • Automotive Retail: National & Regional Trends in Compensation, Benefits & Retention, which is the industry’s top resource for helping dealers meet their No. 1 challenge of attracting and retaining productive employees. It contains a clear analysis of employment trends, including national and regional data for 60 light-vehicle and commercial-truck dealership career positions as well as data on pay, benefits and turnover and more; and

  • Compensation, Benefits and Retention: How Your Dealership Compares, which is an individualized comparative report for each participating dealership.
Dealerships that participate in the study will also receive access to the entire online DWS Database and Search Tool, which includes more than 1.6 million payroll records from over 10,000 dealerships.

The Search Tool categories include: report type (compensation or tenure), franchise/brand, sales volume, geographic location (national, regional and state), dealership department, and job title. For example, a dealership can compare compensation for all service positions in neighboring states by using the Search Tool.
