NAEYC Annual Conference and Expo - Two Weeks Away

The NAEYC Annual Conference & Expo heads to Atlanta, November 8-11. 2006 National Teacher of the Year Kimberly Oliver has just been added to the slate of speakers for the Opening General Session/Celebration of Literacy at the NAEYC Annual Conference. Kimberly, a kindergarten teacher at Broad Acres Elementary School in Silver Spring, Maryland, works with at-risk children and took a major role in restructuring the institutional design of the school. As a result of those efforts the school has achieved Adequate Yearly Progress for the past three years, meeting or exceeding all requirements for the No Child Left Behind Act. Joining Kimberly for the Opening General Session on Wednesday, November 8 from 4:30-6:00 p.m. will be world-renowned writer Vera B. Williams, highly respected researcher Professor Dorothy Strickland, and inspiring Grammy winners Cathy Fink and Marcy Marxer. NAEYC appreciates the support of Target for the "NAEYC Celebration of Literacy." Survey of Early Childhood Educators

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has launched a national education and action campaign to teach parents and families how to recognize the early warning signs of a developmental disorder - and to encourage parents and families, health care providers and early childhood educators to act early. In support of that campaign, NAEYC is hosting a survey to learn more about how early childhood educators communicate with families. Please click here to participate in this brief, voluntary, anonymous survey.

Building Social Skills in the Early Years and Beyond

Young Children, November 2006

The November 2006 issue of Young Children focuses on the social and emotional needs of young children – an area the American Academy of Pediatrics has just advised parents to consider as primary when looking for an early childhood setting for their children. Articles address separation, emotions, social and emotional competencies, problem solving, play, teacher-child relationships, and more.

Be sure to look for Of Primary Interest, a new column for kindergarten and early elementary teachers sponsored by the National Association for Early Childhood Specialists in State Boards of Education (NAECS /SDE). This column will alternate with Rocking and Rolling, Supporting Infants, Toddlers and Their Families sponsored by Zero to Three, which focuses on infant and toddler topics.
