Stealth Fan

This new Panasonic combination fan/light hides in plain sight. One of the recessed light fixtures in the photo (right)  is also a vent fan...but they all look just the same.

Nonetheless, one of them is connected to a powerful fan that's incredibly quiet.

The WhisperRecessed fan removes 80 cubic feet of air per minute, is EnergyStar rated and has a noise level as low as 0.8 sones. Its dual-duct adapter allows for installation in either a 4" or 6" duct without additional adapters. And it comes with an EnergyStar-rated 18 watt CFL lamp.

Composite Low-Maintenance Decking

The last thing a 50+ homeowner needs is a deck that requires a lot of work to keep up. So it's no surprise  that alternatives to wood are popular with boomers.

NyloDeck is a green, sustainable composite deck material made from recycled carpet fibers, and contains neither wood nor plastic. That means it doesn't splinter, swell or absorb moisture, so it's resistant to mold and mildew.

It come in board lengths up to 24 feet, and spans joists 24" on center. The five colors are consistent throughout the material. And its 25-year warranty communicates reliability to buyers.

If Doors Could Talk...

The Jeld-Wen Molded Impression interior door can't actually talk, but it can communicate.

The steel door's magnetic chalkboard option lets family members leave notes to one another, or record items for the next shopping trip...or gives the grandchildren a place to express their artistic impulses without making a mess. Because it's magnetic, papers, cards and other important notes can be posted there as well.

The door also is available with a full-length mirror option. It's not just for the inside of the closet door — it can also make a narrow hallway look bigger.

And if both options appeal, the chalkboard can face one side, and the mirror can be on the other.
