NAHU Dues and Tax Information

Please note for 2010 income tax purposes that 70% of your NAHU national dues is deductible as a business expense. The remaining 30% is not deductible due to the lobbying activity NAHU participates in throughout the year. In general, 501(c)(6) tax-exempt organizations may engage in an unlimited amount of lobbying, provided that the lobbying is related to the organization’s exempt purpose. An organization will be regarded as attempting to influence legislation if it contacts, or urges the public to contact, members or employees of a legislative body for purposes of proposing, supporting or opposing legislation, or if the organization advocates the adoption or rejection of legislation. If you have any questions about this, please contact Jennifer Murphy.

NAHU's 2011 Legislative Priorities

A new year has ushered in a new Congress and brought a historic number of freshman legislators to Washington. The 112th Congress is beginning with a fired up Republican party ready to challenge many of the President’s initiatives. As a new year dawns, the NAHU Government Relations department has outlined some of our core legislative priorities that will remain a major focus throughout the year.

First and foremost, NAHU is committed to ensuring that the professional agent and broker community can continue to play a vital and constructive role in the reformed health system. We strongly believe consumers should continue to have access to certified, state-licensed independent health insurance agents and brokers for assistance and trusted advice and services in choosing coverage options.

Medical Loss Ratio (MLR) continues to be at the forefront of our policy initiatives and NAHU is working to address this issue through a multi-pronged strategy. We believe Congress should repeal the MLR requirements or pass legislation to carry out the NAIC’s strong recommendation that final MLR standards accommodate adequate compensation for professional health insurance advisers, thereby protecting the valuable role that licensed insurance professionals play in serving consumers.

NAHU also urges Congress to restore the prior open enrollment period for Medicare beneficiaries and supports H.R. 6502/S. 4040, the Medicare Beneficiary Preservation of Choice Act of 2010, which allows beneficiaries to “test drive” their plan and not become locked into a plan choice that does not serve their needs.

NAHU will continue to work with policymakers and other stakeholders to ensure that health reform implementation is carefully crafted and does not undermine reasonable private sector health plan innovations aimed at health promotion, patient safety and cost containment. Your help is crucial when it comes to advancing NAHU’s policy priorities for what will be a critical year in health reform implementation, not just in Washington, but in state capitals across the country. NAHU’s 2011 Capitol Conference is a great way to meet directly with your elected officials and continue to inform them of the importance of these priorities.

HIPAA Privacy/Security and HITECH Tool Kit for Agents, Brokers and Consultants - The tool kit addresses the requirements outlined in the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA), as well as Gramm-Leach-Bliley. NAHU members receive a 10% discount with code NAHU2010.

HIPAA Privacy/Security and HITECH Tool Kit for Employers™ - As a plan sponsor, your clients need to be fully compliant with both HIPAA privacy and security regulations. The addition of HITECH regulations in 2009 means that programs in place before 2009 need to be updated. The tool kit includes a privacy and a security training video that will prepare your clients to meet the requirements of the law. Clients of NAHU members receive a 10% discount with code NAHU2010.

HIPAA Privacy/Security and HITECH Tool Kit for Business Associates™ - The 2009 HITECH law now requires business associates (vendors) who have access to a plan sponsor's employee health information to meet the same HIPAA privacy and security requirements as the plan sponsor. Business associates of your agency must also comply (IT vendors, shredding companies, cleaning crews, landlords, lawyers, CPAs). This tool kit assumes the business associate does not offer health plans to its employees, thus there are no forms for managing employee health information. Five Tips to Attract the Best Candidates in 2011

Save 15% off a single job posting

Nearly half of recession weary workers are inclined to look for new job opportunities outside their firm in 2011, according to several national surveys.

Here are the top 5 ways to ensure the strongest candidates, including passive job seekers, find your organization this year.

1. Create clear job descriptions with responsibilities and expected outputs.

2. Leverage associations and other networks where the best and brightest in a field converge.

3. Ensure your website conveys the firm’s vision, this is the first place potential candidates will go to research your company and you want them excited.

4. Determine the behavioral characteristics that you seek and design interview questions to screen for them.

5. Post your job ad on National Association of Health Underwriters (NAHU) so it will be seen by highly qualified candidates, rather than generic job boards that will inundate you with unqualified applicants.

Place an ad on National Association of Health Underwriters (NAHU) by January 30th and receive 15% off when you enter the promotional code "NEWYEAR15".

Offer valid on any single job posting through 1/30/11
