Japan Disaster Relief

Many of our members have asked how they can help the victims of the devastating earthquake and tsunami in Japan. Many have already given to support the relief efforts which include food, water and shelter for thousands of displaced families.

NAHU, along with many insurance industry groups, would like to encourage you to make a donation to this industry-wide effort. You can support the fund by making an online donation with your credit card or by sending a check to:

MDRT Japan Disaster Relief Fund
MDRT Foundation
325 W. Touhy Avenue
Park Ridge, IL 60068

One hundred percent of all contributions will directly support the American Red Cross and MDRT Foundation Japan, providing medical care, food, clothing and shelter to those in affected areas of Japan. Donations will be accepted through April 30, 2011.

MLR Bill Drops in House

H.R. 1206, the “Access to Professional Health Insurance Advisors Act of 2011” was introduced to the House with bipartisan support last month. NAHU CEO Janet Trautwein released a statement applauding the 16 original co-sponsors for working to protect health care consumers and the economy by preserving the role of health insurance agents and brokers. Continued efforts by NAHU’s Government Relations staff are underway to promote the bill and gain more legislative support for H.R. 1206, but we also need public opinion support for the bill and ask that you renew efforts to bring the medical loss ratio issue to the forefront of the media.

For more media resources on medical loss ratio, visit the “Medical Loss Ratio” section of the Media Kits by Topic webpage.

NAHU in the News

Many of last month’s press hits come from blogs hosted by major media outlets, including Time Magazine’s Swampland, The New York Times’ Prescriptions and The Hill’s Healthwatch. Overall, they are balanced and position us as experts on MLR as well as the premiere trade association representing agents/brokers. It is not NAHU’s policy to comment on blogs; however, we encourage you to comment on the linked blogs and share your experiences as agents/brokers and tell why you believe this bill is so important.

Don’t miss the article “Insurance brokers seek protection as health-care law squeezes payments to them” featuring NAHU members Gary Cox and Jesse Patton published in the online and print edition of the Washington Post. NAHU was also featured in the recent Woman’s Day article “Health Experts You Can Call On.” Watch media coverage of Oklahoma Governor Mary Fallin speaking to the Tulsa Association of Health Underwriters about health care reform and her plans to protect agents/brokers.

NAHU was featured in more than 175 news stories last month, reaching an audience of 49 million people. You can access the major stories, including articles from Insurance & Financial Advisor, National Underwriter, Agent’s Sales Journal, Congressional Quarterly, Huffington Post, Politico, Washington Post, Time/CNN blog, New York Times' blog and Yahoo! Voluntary Benefits Solutions Newsletter

As NAUH President Steve Selinksy says in the latest edition of Health Insurance Underwriter, “As many markets experience a decline in the number of individual and small-group offerings, supplemental and ancillary offering continue to expand…If you evaluate your current book of business and prospects, you may identify that you are leaving money on the table by not having discussions on these types of products with your customers.” One important area of supplemental and ancillary offerings Steve is talking about is voluntary benefits. Smart’s Publishing, which publishes the client newsletter Employee Benefits Report that many NAHU agents use and has partnered with NAHU for many years, is now offering a publication that might be helpful in this regard, Voluntary Benefits Solutions. NAHU members get a 10% discount and members who place an order before May 15 will get the $150 set-up fee waived. To view the current issue, click here.
