Professional Development Day at Annual Convention

Are you unable to attend NAHU's Annual Convention in its entirety? You can still register to attend the Professional Development Day on Monday, June 27, which will feature a broad range of workshops designed especially for benefits professionals.

In Monday's general session, Richard Popper, who oversees the new federal program for HHS and previously ran the state high risk pool in Maryland, will speak on the federal government's decision to pay agents for enrolling consumers in the federal Pre-Existing Conditions Insurance Plan, and other changes affecting enrollment in the PCIP.

Monday’s general session will also feature Jason Young, president of LeadSmart, Inc., which specializes in leadership and customer service. Jason shares his vision in developing successful corporate cultures and workplace environments with forward-thinking companies, including Starbucks and Coca Cola. In a changing legislative landscape, customer service will be the key to growing your business. You won’t want to miss Jason’s perspective on how outstanding customer service will differentiate you from your competitors!

Interested in Serving on NAHUís Long Term Care or Senior Issues Committees?

Are you interested in having a lasting influence on the direction of NAHU’s policy objectives relating to senior and long term care issues? If so, please consider serving on NAHU’s Long Term Care Advisory Group or Senior Issues Committee! NAHU is seeking interested individuals willing to serve on one or both of these committees for 2011-2012.

The objective of the Long Term Care Advisory Group and the Senior Issues Committee is to promote NAHU membership to LTC agents and brokers by raising the profile of long term care issues and providing input on related matters raised in both the federal and state arenas. Members of these committees bring with them geographic diversity and a variety of professional expertise.

If you are interested in serving on one or both of these committees please do not hesitate to contact Kristin Leighty at kleighty@nahu.org or (703) 276-3803 by June 20!

HUPAC Administrative Fund Campaign

The efforts to implement health care reform are underway and signify a changing time for our industry. NAHU is increasingly visible in promoting regulatory and legislative solutions that can help improve health care reform and make the system better for American consumers. NAHU’s political action committee, HUPAC, helps NAHU gain access and communicates our message in Washington. To achieve this goal, HUPAC needs to focus on raising member contributions to go directly to candidates.

Here is where your chapter can make a difference: Although chapters are not allowed to contribute money to the PAC that would go directly to political candidates, they can contribute to the HUPAC Administrative Fund, which covers various PAC administrative expenses. In previous years, NAHU chapters across the country have generously contributed to the HUPAC Administrative Fund and we are hoping you will also consider contributing this year.

We ask that your chapter consider making a voluntary contribution of $1 per member (e.g. 100 members = $100) to the fund. Please make all checks payable to the HUPAC Administrative Fund and send all contributions to:

HUPAC Administrative Fund
Attn: Kristin Leighty
NAHU
2000 N. 14th Street, Suite 450
Arlington, VA 22201

Alternatively, your chapter can make a contribution in person at NAHU’s 2011 National Convention in San Antonio during the Town Hall meeting. All chapters that contribute to the fund will be recognized at NAHU’s convention. Thank you for your support!

Compliance Training Tools

HIPAA Privacy/Security and HITECH Tool Kit for Agents, Brokers and Consultants - The tool kit addresses the requirements outlined in the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA), as well as Gramm-Leach-Bliley. NAHU members receive a 10% discount with code NAHU2010.

HIPAA Privacy/Security and HITECH Tool Kit for Employers™ - As a plan sponsor, your clients need to be fully compliant with both HIPAA privacy and security regulations. The addition of HITECH regulations in 2009 means that programs in place before 2009 need to be updated. The tool kit includes a privacy and a security training video that will prepare your clients to meet the requirements of the law. Clients of NAHU members receive a 10% discount with code NAHU2010.

HIPAA Privacy/Security and HITECH Tool Kit for Business Associates™ - The 2009 HITECH law now requires business associates (vendors) who have access to a plan sponsor's employee health information to meet the same HIPAA privacy and security requirements as the plan sponsor. Business associates of your agency must also comply (IT vendors, shredding companies, cleaning crews, landlords, lawyers, CPAs). This tool kit assumes the business associate does not offer health plans to its employees, thus there are no forms for managing employee health information. Business associates for clients of NAHU members receive a 10% discount with code NAHU2010.
