The Broker Bill Is On It's Way!
H.R. 1206, "the broker bill," is a measure on the move! This bill to remove independent agent and broker commissions from the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act's (PPACA) and medical loss ratio (MLR) calculation is one of NAHU's top government affairs priorities, and it has made significant legislative progress during the past week. Less Uninsured, Good! Way More on Public Plan Coverage, Bad!
Last Wednesday the United States Census Bureau announced that the number of uninsured Americans declined slightly from 50.0 million in 2010 to 48.6 million in 2011, as did the percentage without coverage - from 16.3 percent in 2010 to 15.7 percent in 2011. The modest gains in the number of insured Americans have been widely attributed to the health reform law's dependent under-26 group health insurance mandate... Read More
Fuzzy Math
Last week both the Obama Administration and the Kaiser Family Foundation issued very different reports about the cost of health insurance in 2011. The one from the Obama Administration claims over $2 billion in health insurance premium savings in the past year, while the Kaiser Family Foundation report shows the average American covered by employer-sponsored insurance paid $700 more in premiums in 2011... Read More

The mark-up of H.R. 1206 was not the only Congressional committee action NAHU was paying close attention to last week. On Wednesday, September 12 the House Ways and Means Committee held a hearing about health insurance exchanges. This Week in Washington
Last week, on Thursday, September 13 the House approved a continuing resolution to fund the government through March 30, 2013, at funding levels for FY 2013 set by the Budget Control Act of 2011. The Senate is scheduled to take up the legislation this coming Wednesday, setting the stage for Congress to adjourn a the end of this week.
