Burwell Confirmation Vote Will Be Next Week
It looks like when the Senate reconvenes next week, one of its first orders of business will be to vote on the nomination of Sylvia Matthews Burwell to be the new secretary of the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS). Last Thursday, Majority Leader Reid filed cloture on the Burwell nomination, which began the process to bring the nomination up for a vote on the Senate floor. Where is the GOP Alternative?
There is a tug-of-war going on amongst the GOP leadership. Again. As we all know, congressional Republicans have been promising to deliver a comprehensive health reform alternative since before they first coined the catch-phrase “repeal and replace.” And there are a few alternative bills out there developed by high-ranking Republicans, including the Burr-Hatch-Coburn Senate bill and one offered in the House by Republican Study Committee Members Phil Roe (R-TN) and Steve Scalise (R-LA). But the problem is the entire GOP caucus doesn't want to coalesce behind either bill.
