Today, Centers of Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) Administrator Marilyn Tavenner announced that she would be resigning from her position next month. Andy Slavitt, who currently serves as the principal deputy administrator of the agency, will serve as the acting administrator. Tavenner had led CMS since 2011 as acting administrator and was confirmed to her permanent position in 2013 by a 91-7 confirmation vote in the Senate.

Tavenner’s departure follows Medicaid/CHIP Director Cindy Mann, who announced last month that she would be stepping down from her position. Mann had headed Medicaid since 2009 and is being replaced temporarily by Vikki Wachino, who serves as her deputy.
